COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY

Department: Mechanical Engineering Department

Examiner : Dr. Ahmed Abdellatif Hamed IBRAHIM
Course : Hydraulic & Pneumatic systems
Course No. : ME464 Marks:
Date : 24.01.2021 Time: 2 hours

*Please answer all of the following questions*

Question (1): (10 Marks)

a) Explain thoroughly the following terms (use sketches if needed):

i. Cavitation
ii. Pilot operated relief valve
iii. Swash plate angle
iv. downsizing of hydraulic components
v. Pressure compensated flow control valves.

Question (2): (10 Marks)

a) A sequence valve is used in a hydraulic press with two cylinders. The first cylinder exerts 10 kN
to move and hold the work piece while the other cylinder is used to perform the pressing job
with 200 kN. Both cylinders have bore diameter of 120 mm and a 90 mm rod diameter. Both
cylinders have to move at velocity of 4.5 m/min.
Draw the circuit and then determine:
i. Pump pressure during work piece movement.
ii. Pump pressure during pressing.
iii. The capacity of the pump.
iv. Select appropriate pressure to set the sequence valve.

b) Explain in details the closed loop control of an electrohydraulic servo system.

Question (3): (10 Marks)

a) A counter balance valve is used to control the downward speed of a 15 tons load. The
cylinder has a bore diameter of 160 mm and an 80 mm rod diameter. The Load has to be
lifted by a velocity of 15 m/min, and moving downward by a velocity of 10 m/min,
Determine:
i. The capacity of the pump.
ii. Vg of the pump knowing that the volumetric efficiency =0.8 % and the
pump rotating speed = 4000 rpm
iii. Select appropriate pressure to set the Counter Balance valve, and the relief
valve.
b) The bent-axis axial piston pump has 12 cylinders. The inside diameter of the pistons is 15
mm and the pitch circle diameter is 80 mm. The pump is rotating at 3500 rpm. The angle of
inclination of the cylinder block is 30°. The pump inlet and exit pressures are 0.5 MPa and 25
MPa respectively. The pump volumetric efficiency is 97% and the mechanical efficiency is 92
%.

EDQMS 2/3 1
Determine:
i. The pump theoretical and real flow rate.
ii. The driving torque of the pump.
iii. The required power to drive the pump.
iv. Pump internal leakage flow rate and the resistance to leakage.

Question (4): (10 Marks)

A lathe head stock (spindle) shown in figure.1 is directly driven by a hydraulic motor. The lathe is
used to turn a bar with a maximum diameter of 60 mm. The maximum tangential cutting force on
the lathe tool is 2 kN and the maximum rotational speed of the head stock is 700 rev/min. The
maximum pressure set by the relief valve is 200 bar and the total pressure drop between the relief
valve and the hydraulic motor is 10 bar, the back-pressure at the motor being 5 bar. The overall and
volumetric efficiencies of the motor are 0.85 and 0.9 respectively.
Determine the following:
i. The minimum displacement in cm3/rad.
ii. The flow rate to the motor at maximum speed.
iii. The maximum hydraulic input power to the motor.
iv. Draw the hydraulic circuit.
