QUESTION 2
Read the information below and answer the questions.

SCENARIO: SCHOOL SIGNALLING SYSTEM TO CROSS THE ROAD SAFELY

Thabang Secondary School is situated on one of the main roads in the local township.
Vehicles are travelling at a high speed on the road where learners have to cross the
street to access the school premises. Accidents have occurred last year where three
learners were hit by an passing vehicle.

The SGB have decided to build a pedestrian

crossing that will control the traffic before and
after school hours. The crossing will be operated
with a traffic light that is activated on either side
of the road to ensure the safe crossing of
pedestrians.
[Source: https//www.son.co.za]
Learners of the patrol unit will hold barriers on both sides of the road while the
pedestrians cross the road.

You are requested to design a scale model of the pedestrian crossing with a traffic light
and barriers.

Requirements for the traffic system:

1. The traffic light should include two lights: red and green
2. The traffic light should be activated from either side of the road.
3. The length of the posts where the robots will be fixed unto must
be 2500mm.
4. The traffic light must be clearly visible to oncoming traffic and it should not be
obstructed by trees.
5. The traffic system must make use of barriers that will
close the road for learners to cross safely.
6. The traffic light must be operated with solar panels.
7. The cost of the scale model should not exceed R150.

QUESTION 4

Read the case study below and answer questions.

FOOD ADDITIVES AFFECT BEHAVIOUR IN PEOPLE

On average 30% of foods in our diet are processed foods. Many processed foods have to
be enriched by adding inorganic minerals and vitamins to compensate for the nutrition
lost in the processing of food.

Noticeable disorders or side effects can been seen in children and adults, namely an
increase in Attention Deficit Disorder in children and an increase in symptoms of
Alzheimer’s in adults.

Behavioural problems occur in children due to the effect of added additives to food -
children exhibited constant crying tantrums, irritability, restlessness and severe sleep
disturbance when affected by food colouring.
Food colourings in juices, cereals, snacks and vitamin supplements affect the functioning
of the nervous system.

When food additives are added to natural foods both physical and behavioural problems
can occur. The three most common symptoms found when we get too many food
additives are headaches, anxiety and upset stomachs. Common food additives to watch
out for, besides food colourings are preservatives, artificial sweeteners and caffeine.

Preservatives are found in all processed foods and even in some of the natural foods
such as fruits and vegetables. What children eat while growing has a great effect on the
way they think, learn and act.

Some disadvantages of processed food are: loss of nutritional value of food and an
increase in the price of the processed food.
