MECHANICAL SPLICE CLOSURE FOR JELLY FILLED TELEPHONE
PRIMARY CABLES, CAPACITY FROM 400 PAIR TO 2700 PAIR
1 . General
1-1 The splice closure are required to protect straight or branch splices in multi pair jelly-
filled telecommunication cables from environmental influences either in manholes or
buried application
1-2 The required splice closure should be easy to open and close several time without
damage
1-3 Permanent, reusable, sealing materials are to be assured.
1-4 Splice Closure support all diameters ( 0.4 , 0.5 , 0.6 , 0.9 )
1-5 the splice closure shall be primarily suitable for use on the following cables:-
1-5-1 Junction cables.
1-5-2 Local main cables.
1-6 Splice shall be done using modular or individual connectors.
1-7 A minimum of 5 years life for all plastic and sealing material are to be assured
(storage temperature varies from 10°c up to 55 °c , relative humidity up to 95%)
1-8 The closure shall be equipped for testing with dry air after installation at 0.7bar over
air pressure ( relative pressure ).
1-9 Few and simple tools should be required for installation according to TE requirements
2 . Specification:
2-1 constructional designs:
2-1-1 The closure shall consist of the following main parts:-
2-1-2 A rugged longitudinally slit plastic tube one or two parts locked with clamping bars
made of corrosion proof steel. according to ASTM B117
N.B A strong plastic locking can be offered in order to eliminate usage of tension
tool to lock steel bars.
2-1-3 Two plastic end cups can be accommodate up to 3 cables for each side.
2-1-4 Special sealing tapes and cords made of an adhesive durable plastic sealing
compound
2-1-5 An inner steel supporting structure transferring the mechanical forces from cable to
cable and providing electrical shield continuity.
2-2 materials:
2-2-1 The plastic parts shall be made of durable plastic compound colored black, which
must be tested against environmental attacks and aging according to ASTM G 153.
2-2-2 The profile of the slit in the tube shall be designed as a groove and tongue seal with
the sealing cord to be placed in between
2-2-3 The end caps shall contain a test valve on one side and an external grounding
device on the other side.
2-2-4 For large cable sizes, a multi-piece end caps may be used that can accommodate
up to 4 cables shall be supplied.
2-2-5 The end caps shall be prepared for an easy fitting of the multi cables to entrance
holes, on site or work shop.
N.B End caps which will be offered without the need of a drilling tool to prepare the
cable hole will be preferable.

2-3 Packing
2-3-1 Each individual splice closure shall be packed in the separate carton (separate
carton for each splice closure) with all it's component which consist of:-
2-3-1-1 Plastic tube parts (splice cover).
2-3-1-2 Two-pieces end cap one with valve and the other with grounding device.
2-3-1-3 Three-pieces end cap for large size.
2-3-1-4 Sealing tap.
2-3-1-5 Accessory package
2-3-1-6 Splice protection.
2-3-1-7 Clamping bars (either steel or plastic)
2-3-1-8 Clamping & band for steel clamping and bars.
2-3-1-9 Connection bars (two).
2-3-1-10 Perforated band (two) for shield connection.
2-3-1-11 Sealing cords (reusable).
2-3-1-12 End cap clamping bands.
2-3-1-13 Cleaning cloth
2-3-1-14 Additional sealing tapes and cords as spare.
2-3-1-15 The proper quality of the desiccant or encapsulate.
2-3-2 The required closure may be live for additional time with proper desiccant
Minimum life time for the required encapsulate shall not be less than 5 years under
the following storage conditions
2-3-2-1 Storage temperature bet 10°c up to 55°c.
2-3-2-2 Relative storage humidity up to 95%.
If required the closure can be equipped with the proper weight of desiccant (Silica,
jell).
2-3-3 Desiccant shall be backed as follow:-
2-3-3-1 An inner paper bag.
2-3-3-2 An outer aluminum bag for storage and transportation (temp 10°c up to 55°c,
relative humidity up to 95%).
2-3-3-3 Cable size from 400 up to 2700 pairs.
2-3-3-4 All test valves and conditions shall be given. (Electrical, mechanical & physical ).
