ASSIGNMENT 4

1. Which of the following functions T from R2 into R2 are linear transformations?

i. T(x1,x2)=(1+x1,x2)

ii. T(x1,x2)=(x2,x1)

iii. T(x1,x2)=(x12,x2)

iv. T(x1,x2)=(sin x1,x2)

v. T(x1,x2)=(x1 - x2,0)

2. Show that the maps T: ℂ → ℂ given by T(z) =iz and U: ℂ → ℂ given by 𝑈(𝑧) = 𝑧̅ are linear maps.

3. Fix v ∈ V. Consider the map Tv : V → V given by T(x) = x+v. Prove that Tv is linear if and only if
v=0. ( Tv is called the translation map of V by v).

4. Let T: ℝ2 → ℝ3 be given by T(x,y)=(x,y,xy). Is T a linear map?

5. Let V be a vector space of nxn matrices and let B be a fixed nxn matrix. Define T: V →V as
𝑇(𝐴) = 𝐴𝐵 − 𝐵𝐴. Is T a linear map?

6. Let F be a field and V the vector space of all polynomial functions from F into F. Let D be the
differentiation operator and let T be the linear operator ‘multiplication by x’ given by 𝑇(𝑓) =
𝑥𝑓. Show that 𝑇𝐷 ≠ 𝐷𝑇.

7. Let T be the unique linear operator on ℂ3 for which

𝑇(𝑒1 ) = (1,0, 𝑖), 𝑇(𝑒2 ) = (0,1,1), 𝑇(𝑒3 ) = (𝑖, 1,0)
Is T invertible?

8. Let T be the unique linear operator on ℝ3 defined by 𝑇(𝑥1 , 𝑥2 , 𝑥3 ) = (3𝑥1 , 𝑥1 − 𝑥2 , 2𝑥1 + 𝑥2 + 𝑥3 ).

Is T invertible?

9. Let T: ℝ2→ℝ3 be defined by T(x,y)=(x,x+y,y). Find the range and Kernel of T and their dimensions.

10. Can you construct a linear transformation T: ℝ2→ℝ4 such that Image (T) = {(x1,x2,x3,x4) ∈ℝ4 :
x1+x2+x3+x4=0}?

11. Can you construct a linear transformation T: ℝ2→ℝ3 such that Image (T) = {(x1,x2,x3) ∈ℝ3 :
x1+x2+x3 =0}?

12. Show that the map f: ℝ4→ ℝ3 defined by f(x,y,z,w)=(x-y,y+z,z-w) is surjective.
