Key Concepts:
BIOMOLECULES
Biomolecules are substances that is produced by a living organism which include large macromolecules
such as proteins, polysaccharides, lipids and nucleic acids. Biomolecules play indispensable roles in all life
processes, including disease development, so the accurate detection of biomolecules is critical to disease
diagnosis and therapy. These are the primary source of energy and life of most living organisms on earth. The
existence of these life-giving molecules guarantees the survival of most living organisms on earth. It provides
most essentials substances for all living creatures.
FOUR MAIN CLASSES OF BIOMOLECULES

Carbohydrates are molecules made from aldehydes and ketones containing numerous hydroxyl groups. It is
the major source of energy in the body. These are simple sugar, starch, and cellulose.
• Monosaccharides is the building blocks of carbohydrates are composed of a single ring. The simplest
form of sugar such glucose.
• Disaccharides consist of two monosaccharides that are chemically combined such lactose o milk
sugar. These are the product of condensation reaction in which two molecules or parts of the same
molecule combine and during this reaction water is lost and water is lost during the process. when the

bond between monosaccharides is broken and water is being added in the reaction it is called
hydrolysis.
• Polysaccharides are polymers containing numerous monosaccharide monomers such as cellulose,
starch and glycogen.
Lipids
• They are water insoluble molecules that are composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Glycerol and
fatty acids are building blocks of fats (lipids). Fats and oils are triglycerides that are combinations
of glycerol and three fatty acids are example of lipids. Lipids are naturally abundant and it is
also available in our daily food products in solid and liquid form. Steroids are another class of
lipids whose molecules are composed fused rings of atoms. These steroids are found also in
our cells, and one of the important steroids is the cholesterol.
Proteins
• Proteins are polymers of amino acids. They are found as structural materials in hair, nails and
connective tissues. Enzymes are proteins that act as biological catalysts. Amino acid is a building block
of protein
Nucleic Acids
• Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and Ribonucleic acid (RNA) are nucleic acids. Both DNA and RNA are
polymers that are made up of nucleotides. Nucleic acids carry genetic information on how to make
proteins. Nucleotide is the building block of nucleic acid. Nucleotides are molecules that are composed
of three parts: a five-carbon sugar, a nitrogen-containing base.
Objective/subtask:
Recognize the major categories of biomolecules such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic
acids.

Objective/ subtask: Identify the major categories of biomolecules such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins,
and nucleic acids.
A. Directions: Match the biomolecules in column A with their description in column B. Write the letter of
the correct answer on the line before the number.
_________4. Nucleic Acids D. Water insoluble molecules containing hydrogen and oxygen
B. Directions: Write TRUE if the statement is true and FALSE if otherwise. Write your answer on the
line before the number.
_________1. A polymer is a large organic molecule consisting of a small repeating unit called monomers.
_________2. Hydrolysis is a reaction in which water is added to a reactant, breaking the reactant into two
products of molecules.
_________5. The molecules that code for the hereditary traits of an individual are the nucleic acids.
