Literary Essay Checklist

Please note that there are two checklists in this document. The first checklist is just a
general checklist for the literary essay. If you would like a checklist for those aiming for
80% and above, please see the second checklist.

Introduction
Does my essay have a title?
Does my introduction show context? E.g. In Hamlet...
Have I introduced the topic/ question in my own words?
Did I quote the quote that was given? If so, take it out!
Have I given my stance/ opinion on the topic / what I’m going to try and prove?
Have I given my three signposts/ three subtopics to prove my stance?
Body Paragraph 1
Do I have a topic sentence?
Does my topic sentence give a clear indication of the subtopic this paragraph will
unpack?
Does my topic match the first signpost in my introduction?
Have I given clear evidence to prove my topic sentence?
Does my evidence include a timeline or narration? If it does, pick only the specific
information needed.
Have I explained the reason why the evidence proves my point?
Have I linked my explanation back to the subtopic to prove the point made in the
topic sentence?
Does my link match/prove the stance stated in the introduction?
Body Paragraph 2
Do I have a topic sentence?
Did I introduce my topic sentence with a subordinating conjunction, and then
continue to create a complete sentence?
Does my topic sentence give a clear indication of the subtopic this paragraph will
unpack?
Does my topic match the second signpost in my introduction?
Have I given clear evidence to prove my topic sentence?
Does my evidence include a timeline or narration? If it does, pick only the specific
information needed.
Have I explained the reason why the evidence proves my point?
Have I linked my explanation back to the subtopic to prove the point made in the
topic sentence?
Does my link match/prove the stance stated in the introduction?
Body Paragraph 3
Do I have a topic sentence?
Did I introduce my topic sentence with a subordinating conjunction, and then

Does my link match/prove the stance stated in the introduction?
Conclusion
Did I start with “In conclusion”? If so, take it out!
Have I included all three of my signposts?
Did I reiterate my stance and how it was proved?
Did I state how this all ties in with the topic given?
Grammar Check
Have I checked my spelling?
Have I fixed all my comma splice errors?
Have I corrected all my missing words?
Have I used “their” and “there” correctly?
Have I used “his” and “he’s” correctly?
Have I removed all contractions?
Have I corrected any errors of concord?
Have I fixed clumsy sentence structure?

Extra checklist if you are aiming for an 80+% average.

Have I showcased my personal voice through my unique manipulation of language
conventions?
Have I corrected every grammatical error?
Have I used my punctuation in a way that heightens my stance/ point?
Have I thought outside the box in order to prove my stance?
Can I back up every ‘new’ thought with the given text?
Is my structure perfect?
Have I showcased my vocabulary effectively? Make sure you don’t put fancy words
in if they do not match your tone/ voice/ content.
