TASK 1
Evie: When are you going home, Charlie?
Charlie: Tomorrow, and I’ve bought everyone a gift. Look!
Evie: Who are these for?
Charlie: Granny. Her hands get cold in the winter, and these will keep them nice and warm.
Evie: Is the scarf for her, too?
Charlie: No, that’s for Grandad. I also got him this – he needs a new one. He lost his wallet last
month.
Evie: Nice … What did you get your mum?
Charlie: I bought her these earrings … and this bracelet.
Evie: Oh, Charlie, they’re beautiful!
Charlie: They’re a special gift because it’s her birthday tomorrow.
Evie: What about your dad?
Charlie: I got him this. Everyone else in my family listens to music on their phones, but not Dad.
He’ll also enjoy listening to the news on it in the mornings.
Evie: And your brother?
Charlie: Oh, he’s football mad. I was going to get him a football shirt, but then I saw this. It’s a
history of his team and there are some great photos in it.
Evie: What about your sister?
Charlie: This. It’s bigger than her school bag and she can put all her books and lots of things in
it.
Evie: I love the colours.
TASK 2
Woman: Good afternoon, families! It’s lovely to see you all at our wonderful resort. You’ve
certainly got some great weather for your holiday! Now, in a moment you’ll be shown up to your
rooms. Then in about an hour’s time, at about one o’clock, a light lunch will be served in the
dining room. The dining room is at the front of the hotel, next to the fitness centre. For your
information, breakfast is served between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., lunch is from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and
dinner is served in the evening between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Traditional music is played by local
musicians twice a week during dinner.
Now a few words about activities. There are family trips most mornings which you can join, if
you like. These include visits to local places of interest, including the ruins and various
monuments. I’ll give you more details about those later. You can also visit an outdoor market
where you’ll be able to find souvenirs to take home. That’s only on Thursdays, so don’t miss it.
In the afternoons, you can either walk to the beach, which is just five minutes away, or you can
relax by the hotel swimming pool.
That’s it for now, I think. I hope you like your rooms. Please stay behind if you have any
questions. Otherwise, I’ll see you in the dining room in about an hour. Thank you very much.

I have one brother Paul, who’s 3 years older than me. I’m 18 now, so he’s 21. He’s an
apprentice engineer on ships for the oil and gas industry, so he lives away from home for a
month and then lives home for a month before returning to sea again. He started that just 4
months ago. We get on well although we have always argued a lot though not about important
things, just usual kid stuff like whose turn it is to play video games and things like that. He’s
actually always been really kind and helpful when I have a problem or when friends are mean
to me. I miss him a lot when he isn’t at home although I never tell him that. The house is really
quiet without him. I realize I enjoy arguing with people but I don’t know anyone else who likes
it. My friends think I’m unkind when I argue and my dad doesn’t like it when I argue with him
or mum. My parents are fine. My dad used to be an engineer on ships too, but now he has taken
early retirement. He’s building a boat and wants to sail it around the Mediterranean. I admire
him for that. He always has big ideas and makes them happen. For example, he built our house
completely by himself. Lots of people have big dreams but they don’t actually do anything to
get them but my dad does. My mum is really kind and caring, and has always been interested
in me, my brother and my friends. She hasn’t worked for over 20 years now, so she has plenty
of time. But I’m hoping to move away from home soon. I don’t know what she will do when
both Paul and I aren’t here. I think she will be quite bored. She isn’t good at finding things to
do like my dad is.

TASK 1
Girl: Hey, Jane, there is a musical concert in the park. You want to see the band play.
Boy: I am done with my homework, I can go.
Girl: You will enjoy this evening, Jane. There will be good country music, a lot of stomping
around and definitely a lot of hollering.
Boy: It sounds fun. My favorite is rock 'n 'roll music. However, I have to say that country
melodies can be quite enticing. Alex, what kind of music do you like?
Girl: Oh, I like all kinds of music as long as it is not hard rock.
Boy: Wow, look at the number of people who have already shown up for the concert. Good thing
that we are here already.
Girl: Jane, where do you want to sit? In the shade or in the sun?
Boy: In the shade, please. I have been in the sun too much lately.
Girl: There is a food stand over there. Do you want anything?
Boy: Nothing for me, thanks. I already have my bottle of water.
Girl: I want a bag of chips and a soda. Are you sure you do not want any chips, Jane?
Boy: I am quite sure, besides my mother is cooking some steak and bread for dinner and I want
to save my appetite.
Girl: Jane, you are so lucky to have such a good cook for a mother. For the last time, do you
want anything?
Boy: I am sure I do not want anything. I am doing fine.
Girl: OK, save me a seat. I will be right back.
TASK 2
Speaker 1
I love holidays. They are the best thing in the world. The only problem is they are always too
short. Even summer holidays at school aren't long enough. I recently had an 8 week holiday and
it flew by. It seems as though time goes quickly when we are on holiday and slowly when we are
at school or work. I always really look forward to holidays, even one day holidays are great. I
live in a country that has many national holidays, so there's always a break around the corner. I
feel sorry for some workers who only get two or three weeks holiday a year. They can't do
anything or go anywhere. I love holidays, even if I don't go away. Staying at home is just as
good as going on holiday somewhere. Sometimes going on holiday is stressful.

LISTENING SCRIPTS
The environment is the natural world in which people, animals and plants live. The natural
environment has been seriously affected and degraded by human activities through many
decades.
For instance, the burning of fossil fuels by factories and motor vehicles has led to air pollution
and resulted in acid rains, greenhouse effect and global warming. The use of harmful chemicals
in agriculture has led to serious soil pollution and health problems. Deforestation for land use has
affected the ecosystem and led to the extinction of rare animals and extreme floods and land
erosion. Harmful rubbish, sewage dumped into rivers and oceans has polluted the water and
harm aquatic animals. There are many human activities having seriously impacted on the natural
environment. They have changed and degraded the natural environment and led to many health
problems.
We should do something immediately to protect our environment. For instance, we should
control the burning of fossil fuels and encourage forestation to replace deforestation. In addition,
there should be appropriate places to dump harmful rubbish and chemicals to reduce the rate of
water pollution, a threat to human health and a danger to aquatic animals. To minimize the rate of
environmental degradation and to raise awareness of its threats, the preservation of the
environment should be included in education and mass media. People should make every effort
to preserve the environment for the next generation.
