Introduction

1
ISO in general
ISO [International Organization for Standardization] is
made up of 160* members, which are the national standards
institutes of industrialized, developing and transition
countries, of all sizes and from all regions of the world.

The ISO collection comprises more than 18,600* standards,

which provide the business world, governments and society
as a whole with concrete tools for the three facets of
sustainable development: economic, environmental and
societal.

2
ISO 50 001: 2018: Definition
Energy Management Systems; Requirements and Recommendations for
Implementation, is a voluntary international standard developed by ISO
[International Organization for Standardization].

ISO 50001 specifies the requirements applicable to energy management

systems (EnMS) for organizations.

ISO 50001 is useful for organizations of all sizes, in both the public and
private sectors, for both manufacturing and services, in all regions of the
world.

3
ISO 50001: Systematic Energy Improvement
The ISO 50001 was designed to allow any organization to pursue following a systematic approach and the continuous
improvement of its own energy performance, including:

4
Core Concepts of ISO 50001: 2018
Based on the core concept of continuously improving energy performance, the ISO 50001 Standard defines and
addresses the most important requirements towards energy use and consumption, including; measurement,
procurement, documentation, design, equipment, processes, and personnel.

All these issues can affect the energy performance of any organizations.

The Objectives of ISO 50 001

7
The Benefits of Adopting an ISO 50 001

• Providing a framework to promote energy efficiency throughout the supply chain.

8
Time Required to implement an ISO 50 001
The exact timing to develop an EnMS through the certification will be different for each organization. It largely depends
on aspects such as:

• The will of the company management team.

• Existing process and activities in the company related to EnMS.
• Properly organizing (internally) the staff
dedicated to the EnMS
• The availability of adequate human
and technical resources.
• Sufficient access to past and present data related
to the company’s assets.
• The chosen dimensions of the boundaries and scope of the
EnMS. 9

EnMS Structure
10
The Demands of ISO 50 001

11
ISO 50001 EnMS model
The ISO 50001 Standard is structured according to the general PLAN-DO-CHECK- ACT (PDCA) approach.

The PDCA is an applied, iterative, four-step management method widely used by businesses for the control
and continual improvement of their own processes and products.

12
ISO 50001 EnMS model
PLAN — Establish energy balances of company assets,
as well as define necessary objectives, targets and action
plans that will improve energy performance.
DO — Implement an effective energy management action
plan.
CHECK— Provide a methodological and operational
approach for monitoring and analyzing the energy
performance of the company.
ACT— Continually improve energy performance with the
aim of the EnMS becoming not just a niche tool, but
rather, an integral part of the Energy Policy and day-to-
day operations..
13
The Summary of an Energy
Management System (EnMS)
The ISO 50001 is based on common elements found in many other ISO management system standards, which
ensure a high level of compatibility with other ISOs already implemented in the business, notably with ISO 9001
(Quality), ISO 14001 (Environmental), and ISO 45001 (Occupational Safety & Health).

As in other ISO management systems, an organisation is given a degree of flexibility in how it implements the
EnMS. For example, your organisation can determine its rate, extent, and timescale of the continual
improvement process.

This flexibility helps make EnMS become a so-called "organic system" made up of documents, processes,
people, physical and organisational boundaries, as well as energy objectives and targets. 14
ISO Standard List Annex – Annex L
Annex L is a part of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Directives. It prescribes how ISO
Management System Standards (MSS) should be developed and written. The purpose of Annex L is to enhance
the alignment and consistency of MSS by providing a unified high-level structure, identical core text, and common
terminology and definitions.

Originally known as Annex SC, it was renamed in the 2019 edition. Annex L facilitates the easier implementation
and integration of multiple management systems, such as energy management, environmental management,
health & safety management, and quality management.

These standards have an identical structure and core requirements, which streamline both the implementation
and ongoing maintenance of such systems. This uniformity ensures that organizations can efficiently manage
their various systems in a cohesive manner.

Case Study: General Motors of Mexico
SLP: a certified facility ISO 50001
General Motors (or General Motors Corporation or GM) is an
American automaker.

This General Motors de México San Luis Potosí (SLP)

manufacturing complex won international recognition in 2017
by winning the Energy Management Insight Awards (awards
for advances in energy management),

As a result, the complex has helped raise awareness of the

benefits of ISO 50001 and set an example for companies 28
around the world..
Case Study: General Motors de México
SLP: a certified facility ISO 50001
Thanks to its ISO 50001 certification , it achieved savings of $6 .6 US million over four years and reduced its
CO2 emissions by 62,542 tones. With a payback period of 0.1 years, investment in ISO 50001 quickly paid off
(CEM, 2017).
The following table summarizes the company's ISO 50001 results.

Case Study: General Motors of Mexico
SLP: a certified facility ISO 50001
The decision by the SLP manufacturing complex to seek senior management approval for ISO 50001
certification. Once approved, the complex hired an engineer and developed a master plan to begin the
implementation process.

The SLP manufacturing complex has determined its significant energy uses (SEU) through the establishment of
annual operational controls to reduce its energy consumption and meet its targets.

General Motors' San Luis Potosí manufacturing complex was awarded ISO 50001 certification to validate the
results of its EnMS (Energy Management System) and reinforce General Motors ' positive image as a socially
responsible and environmentally conscious company. 31
05 Conclusion
The main benefit of implementing ISO 50001 is to reduce energy consumption on a sustainable
basis. As for certification, it allows companies with over 250 employees or sales in excess of €50 million
to be exempt from the energy audit requirement (mandatory every 4 years).

ISO 50001:2018 provides significant advantages for energy management and business processes,
helping organizations meet growing global customer demands for reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
Certification assists in establishing, implementing, or improving an Energy Management System
(EnMS), which leads to more efficient use of energy resources and enhanced competitiveness. The
global application of this standard positively impacts climate change.
