Why and how your organisation
will benefit
Makes it easier to manage
energy
Energy Management Systems

• The business benefits of adopting ISO 50001

• An overview of ISO 50001

• Key differences between ISO 50001 and

ISO 14001

• How to become energy efficient without capital

expenditure
Energy Makes the Headlines
Loss of energy capacity will mean higher
bills and risk of blackouts

Nine UK-based coal and oil fired plants with a

combined generating capacity of 11.5 gigawatts (GW)
are due to close by 2015
UK ‘at risk of electricity blackouts by 2015’
due to EU's green laws and power station
closures
The regulator predicted that by 2015/16
there will be just a 4 per cent buffer in
UK energy supplies, compared to the
current level of 14 per cent spare
capacity.

Sustainability Risk Management (SRM)

• Assesses the impact on the long-term future of the

business

• Provides a strategy to mitigate these risks

Drivers for Organisations to Adopt ISO 50001

• Ever increasing energy prices

• Impact on commercial competitiveness

– Products, share price, profits etc

• Finite resources
– Moving from fossil to a renewable base

• Environmental best practice

– Sustainability of operations; CSER
The Rationale Behind ISO 50001

Purpose Outcomes
To improve: Intended to lead to:

• Energy performance • Reductions in greenhouse

gas emissions
• Energy efficiency
• Energy costs
• Energy use
• Other related
• Energy consumption environmental impacts
The Business Benefits of ISO 50001

There is a very strong business case that says energy

management should be front and centre
in a sustainable business.
Features of an EnMS that will Benefit your
Organisation

• Who affects energy consumption?

• Which plant, equipment & fuel to procure

• Planning new processes & buildings

• Identification and monitoring of energy use

What is ISO 50001?

• A systemised approach to energy management

• Systemised being the operative word!

The Systematic Approach to Energy Management

• Prescriptive
• Requires methodologies
• Requires verification
• Requires evidence
Energy Baseline

• Time frame

• Normalised using variables which affect use or

consumption

• Calculate energy savings

• Reference before & after implementing action plans

Energy Performance Indicators (EnPIs)

• Quantitative value or measure of energy performance, as

defined by the organisation
Management Action Plans

• Designation of responsibility

• Means and time frame

• A statement of the method by which the improvement in

energy performance will be verified

• A statement of the method of verifying the results

Operating an Energy Management System

• Competence, training and awareness

• Communication

• Documentation

• Control

• Design

• Procurement
Documents that Should be Included in an EnMs

• Scope & boundaries of the EnMS

• Energy policy
• Energy objectives, targets & action plans
• Energy planning
• Energy review
• Energy baseline
• EnPIs
• Evaluations
• Internal audits
Design

• Facilities, equipment, systems & processes that can have

a significant impact on energy performance

• Consider energy performance improvement opportunities

• Incorporate the energy performance evaluation into the

specification, design & procurement
Key Differences Between EMS and EnMS

ISO 14001 ISO 50001

• Broad brush • Energy specific

• Management role • Prescriptive

• Emergency preparedness • Precise

& response
• Drills deeper
Four Key Areas of Difference

• Energy baseline

• Energy performance indicators

• Design

• Procurement of energy services, products, equipment and

energy
The EnMS System

A systemised approach to successful energy management

enabling the realisation of energy efficiency through the
identification and successful implementation of
energy efficiency measures.
How Can I Reduce my Energy Bills Without Major
Capital Expenditure?

• Use energy in a smarter, more efficient way

• Inform management
• Empower the people
• Build a culture of sustainability

Give your energy management system the oxygen

it needs to live and breathe by having that
system audited and certified.
Actions to Reduce Energy Bills

• Establish how much energy is being consumed

• Identify areas for improvement

• Implement efficiencies

• Monitor and review

Energy Management Systems

• Crucially, adopting an energy management system raises

the profile of an organisation’s Corporate Social and
Environmental Responsibilities (CSER).

• This demonstrates to employees, shareholders,

customers, communities and other stakeholders a
commitment to sustainable, ethical practices.
Three Good Reasons for Adopting ISO 50001
Energy Management Systems

Reduction of

emissions
• use less energy = • fuel efficient = • less energy
reduced fuel bills using fewer global consumed = fewer
resources emissions from
• lower costs = more power stations
competitively • less energy usage
priced product = caring image • fuel efficient plant
& equipment =
reduced usage

The Route to Certification
Tom Johnston
Head of Technical Development
How Will the Certification be Delivered?

• The scheme is a management system certification scheme

which falls under the requirements of ISO 17021.

– Three year certification cycle

– Two stage on site certification audit
– Surveillance audits 1st and 2nd year
– Recertification audit in the third year prior to expiry of
certification.
– Major / minor non-conformance reporting to support
improvement
What is BM TRADA’s Current Position?

Accreditation
• UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) are currently
running a ISO 50001 pilot assessment programme in
which BM TRADA are included.
– Pilot programme commenced – 1st July 2012
– Assessment period 1st July 2012 – 31st March 2013
– Period for closure of UKAS findings – 31st May 2013
– UKAS announce accredited CB’s – 31st July 2013

• We can currently offer unaccredited ISO 50001

certification

Accredited Training
• IRCA accredited Lead Auditor training

Integration with other Management System
Standards

• ISO 50001 follows the Plan Do Check Act cycle

• Common areas with Quality, Environmental and Health &
Safety standards including:
– Policy, objectives and management planning
– Documentation control
– Records management
– Checking & corrective action
– Internal audit
– Management Review

• This provides opportunity for integration with existing

standards and certifications
How Can BM TRADA Assist You?

• Assistance with scoping and certification planning

• Precertification gap analysis

• Technical interpretation

• Accredited training

• Ongoing certification support
