responsibilities.

12.Vision of the EEE To become a front runner in preparing Electrical and

Department Electronics Engineering graduates to be nationally
and globally competitive and thereby contribute value
to the knowledge-based economy and welfare of the
people of the world.

13.Rationale of the Course This core course of the Electrical and Electronic
(Course Description) Engineering program explores the construction,
operating principles, analysis, and applications of
different types of electrical machines, such as
synchronous generators, synchronous motors, stepper
motors, several types of special motors, like universal
motors, servo motor, permanent-magnet synchronous
motor, hysteresis motor, reluctance motor, etc.
Knowledge and understanding of this course can be
used in many advanced courses like electrical power
transmission and distribution, power systems, power
system analysis, and protection, etc.
14.Course Objectives The course is designed to provide students with:
 Synchronous generator: operating principle,
generator types, construction, salient poles, and
non-salient poles, armature and field cores,
armature windings, Y-∆ connection, the effect of
harmonics, alternator on load, computation of

various parameters, such as voltage regulation,
efficiency, etc. Various schemes and modes of
operation of an alternator.
 Stepper Motor: Stepper Motor Principle, Types
and Applications,
 Synchronous motor: characteristic features,
operating principle, method of starting, equivalent
circuit, power flow, torques, vector diagrams, V-
curves, losses, efficiency, and starting power
factor correction.
 Single-Phase Induction Motor: Introduction to
single-phase induction motors, different types and
their characteristics, double-field revolving theory
of single-phase induction motors, starting of
single-phase induction and shaded pole motor.
 Special Type Motor: universal motor, servo motor,
permanent-magnet synchronous motor, hysteresis
motor, reluctance motor, linear motor, electrical
machine design.

student and faculty. For the make-up of Summative assessments, students need to
apply for the SET-B exam according to the AIUB policy.

PART D

19. Learning Materials

Formal lectures will provide the theoretical base for the subject as well as covering its
practical application. A set of lecture notes, and tutorial examples, with subsequent
discussion and explanation, together with suggested reading will support and direct the
students in their study.

Maximum topics will be covered from the textbook. For the rest of the topics, reference
books will be followed. Some Class notes will be uploaded on the web. The whiteboard
will be used for most of the time.

In some cases, multimedia projectors will be used for the convenience of the students.

EEE 2207: Electrical Machines 2 Page 7 of 9

Students must study up to the last lecture before coming to the class and it is suggested
that they should go through the relevant chapter before coming to the class. Just being
present in the class is not enough- students must participate in classroom discussions.

Few assignments will be given to the students based on that class to test their class
performance.
