INTRODUCTION SHORT CIRCUIT ANALYSIS

Accidental or Intentional conductive paths between two or more conductive parts forcing
the electrical potential difference between these conductive parts to be equals or close to
the zero and it also calculating the short rating of the electrical equipment’s withstand
capacity and is also known as a short circuit analysis
STANDARDS OF SHORT CIRCUIT
❖ IEC 60909-2016 “Short circuit current in three phase AC system”
❖ IEC 61363-1998 “Short circuit calculation procedure for three phase AC system is
isolated system”
❖ ANSI IEEE 3002.3-2018 “Recommended practice for calculation of short circuit
current for industrial and commercial power system”
LIMITATION OF IEC 60909
❖ Application for low voltage and high voltage three phase AC system
❖ Applicable for 50 Hertz to 60 Hertz system
❖ Voltage limitation up to 5506 V
TRANSMISSION LINE
A transmission line is a system of conductors that transfers electrical signals from one
place to another.
Transmission lines, which consist of heavy cables strung between tall towers, carry power
from where it is generated to areas where it is needed.
They can carry alternating current or direct current or a system can be a combination of
both. Also, electric current can be carried by either overhead or underground lines.
Causes of fault in Transmission line
• Ageing
• Oversizing
• Poor maintenance
• Lighting and fire surges
• Birds are sitting in the live conductors
• Trees are fall in the lines

Manual Calculation
Nominal kV=11kV
Short circuit current=25kA
X/R ratio=14

MVAsc = √3 × V × I

= √3 × 11 × 25
MVAsc = 476.314kA
Zpu=Zbase/MVAsc

Z% = 20.994

R%= 𝑍%

√[(14)2+1]

R% = 1.4958

Transmission line Calculation
R = 0.001ohm/km
X = 0.4ohm/km
Y = 3.6ohm/km
Line Length = 100km
R = 0.001×100ohm
R = 0.1ohm
X = 0.4×100ohm
X = 40ohm
Then we have to identify Zbase value
𝐵𝑢𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑘𝑉2
Zbase = 𝑜ℎ𝑚

Zbase = 1.221ohm
Rpu = 𝑅

X% = 33.057×100
X% = 3305.78
R-total = Transmission line R% + Grid R%
= 8.26446 + 1.4958
R-total = 9.76026
X-total = Transmission line X% + Grid X%
= 3305.76 + 9.395
X-total = 3315.155

Z-total = √(𝑅2) + (𝑋2)

= √(9.76026)2 + (3315.1693)2
= 3315.16937
Z% = 3315.16937×100

If actual current = 1

331516.937

If = 0.00301pu
Ibase current = 100
√3×𝐵𝑢𝑠 𝑘𝑉

Ibase current = 17.4077

Then the fault current is

If = 0.0001729A
Fault current = 0.0001729 * 1000kA

Fault current = 0.1729kA
