TOPIC Identifying and writing equivalent ratios

LEARNING
Identifies and writes equivalent ratios (M5NS-IIi-124)
COMPETENCY 1
IMPORTANT: Do not write anything on this material. Write your answers on the Learner’s
Activity and Assessment Sheets provided separately.

UNDERSTAND
Identifying and writing equivalent ratios

A Equivalent Ratios

Ratio is the comparison of two or more quantities. Two ratios that have the same value are
called equivalent ratios. To know if two or more ratios are equivalent, you can express them
in simplest form.

To find or identify an equivalent ratios:

• Simply multiply or divide both quantities by the same number.
• It is the same process as finding equivalent fraction.
• If a given ratio is a multiple of another ratio, then the ratios are equivalent.
How to write equivalent ratio?
A ratio can be written in these different ways:
• 3 is to 6 using the word “to”
• 3 using fraction,
6
• 3:6 using colon

EXAMPLE 1

Give the equivalent of 5:20

Solution:

1. Using multiplication and division

Multiplication
5:20 5
20 “We multiply both quantities with same number
5 2 10
20 2 40 2 is used for this example.
5:20 = 10: 40 equivalent ratios

Marichel A. Garcia, Teacher III, Putik Central School SPED Center

2

Division

5:20 5
20
*We find the GCF which is 5 and we divide both
5 5 1
quantities by 5.
20 5 4
5:20 = 1:4 equivalent ratios

EXAMPLE 2

Tell whether 5:7 and 15:21 are equivalent.

Using mean and extreme

5:7=15:21
• 7, 15 are mean
• 5, 21 are extreme
• Multiply the mean
• Multiply the extreme

5 : 7 = 15 : 21

105

105
• Therefore 5:7 and 15:21 are equivalent ratio because they have
the same product.

EXAMPLE 3

Tell whether if 8:6 and 12:9 are equivalent.

Using cross multiplication

• First convert ratio into fraction 8 12
6 9
• Simplify if it possible
• Cross multiply 8 and 9, the product is 72 8 12
6 9

• Cross multiply 12 and 6, the product is 72

• Therefore the 8:6 and 12:9 are equivalent ratio because they have the
same product when we cross multiply.

SAQ-1: How do we write equivalent ratios?

LEARNING
Expresses ratios in their simplest form (M5NS-IIi-125)
COMPETENCY 2
Lesson 2 Topic Title: Expressing Ratio in simplest form

A Ratios in Simplest Form

Simplifying ratios is just the same as simplifying fractions since ratios can be written as
fraction. To reduce ratios in simplest form, divide the numerator and the denominator of each
ratio by their greatest common factor (GCF). The term “simplest form is the same as “lowest
term” in ratios and fractions. Numbers are relatively prime if their greatest common factor
(GCF) is 1. If the numerator and the denominator in a given ratio are relatively prime, then the
given ratio is in simplest form.

EXAMPLE 1

Change 12:24 to simplest form

Solution: Change 12:24 to simplest form

There are 3 ways on how to reduce ratio to simplest form.
Finding the GCF of the given ratio:
a. by listing method
Factors of 12: 1,2,3,4,6,12
Factors of 24: 1,2,3,4,6,8,12,24
GCF = 12
b. by dividing the ratio by their GCF
12:24 = 1:2 12= 1 X 12 24= 24 X 1
12 ÷ 12= 1 4X3 12 X 2
24 ÷ 12= 2 6X2 6X4
c. by using prime factorization
12= 1X2X2X3 = 1
24= 1X2X2X2X3 = 2
12:24=1:2 is the simplest form
Therefore, 12:24, in simplest form is 1:2.

EXAMPLE 2
Solution: Change 15:10 to simplest form.
Another way is in fraction form.
Change 15 to simplest form.
10 To find the GCF:
15 5 3 15 = 1, 3, 5, 15
10 5 2 10 = 1, 2, 5, 10
GCF= 5
15 3
10 2 is the simplest form

ACTIVITY 2

the letter of the correct answer on the space before each item.

Column A Column B

_____1. 4:16 A. 4:3

_____ 3. 21:28 C. 2:3

_____ 4. 20:15 D. 3:4
