Identifying and writing equivalent ratios
A Equivalent Ratios
Ratio is the comparison of two or more quantities. Two ratios that have the same value are
called equivalent ratios. To know if two or more ratios are equivalent, you can express them
in simplest form.
EXAMPLE 1
Solution:
Division
5:20 5
20
*We find the GCF which is 5 and we divide both
5 5 1
quantities by 5.
20 5 4
5:20 = 1:4 equivalent ratios
EXAMPLE 2
5 : 7 = 15 : 21
105
105
• Therefore 5:7 and 15:21 are equivalent ratio because they have
the same product.
EXAMPLE 3
ACTIVITY 1
A. Directions: Identify which of the following shows equivalent ratios. Write YES if they
are equivalent ratios and NO if not.
ACTIVITY 2
B. Directions: Match the ratios in Column A with the equivalent ration in Column B. Write
only the letter of the correct answer on the space before each item.
Column A Column B
REMEMBER
Key Points
Ratio can be written in different ways: colon form, fraction form and the word “to”.
⚫ To identify a ratio equal to a given ratio, simply multiply or divide the numerator
and denominator of the given ratio by one counting number.
⚫ If the a given ratio is a multiple of another ratio, then the ratios are equivalent.

Assessment 1.
Directions: Identify which of the following shows equivalent ratios. Write YES if the ratios are
equivalent and NO if not.
Assessment 2.
Directions: Write the symbol (=) if the given ratios are equivalent, write ( ) if not.
Write your answer on the space provided for.
Assessment 3.
Directions: Choose the letter of the correct answer and write it on the blank before the
number.

Expresses ratios in their simplest form (M5NS-IIi-125)
COMPETENCY 2
Lesson 2 Topic Title: Expressing Ratio in simplest form
Simplifying ratios is just the same as simplifying fractions since ratios can be written as
fraction. To reduce ratios in simplest form, divide the numerator and the denominator of each
ratio by their greatest common factor (GCF). The term “simplest form is the same as “lowest
term” in ratios and fractions. Numbers are relatively prime if their greatest common factor
(GCF) is 1. If the numerator and the denominator in a given ratio are relatively prime, then the
given ratio is in simplest form.
EXAMPLE 1
EXAMPLE 2
Solution: Change 15:10 to simplest form.
Another way is in fraction form.
Change 15 to simplest form.
10 To find the GCF:
15 5 3 15 = 1, 3, 5, 15
10 5 2 10 = 1, 2, 5, 10
GCF= 5
15 3
10 2 is the simplest form
ACTIVITY 1
C. Directions: Express the following ratios to its simplest form using GCF.
1. 8:10
2. 9:12
3. 6:15

D. Directions: Match the ratios in Column A with the simplest form in Column B. Write only
the letter of the correct answer on the space before each item.
