Final Examination for the Semester: October 2017

M.Sc. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, BUET, Dhaka, Bangladesh

Course No.: EEE 6207
Course Title: Broadband Wireless Communication
Time Duration: 2 Hours and 30 Min
Total Marks: 140

There are six questions. Answer any four questions. Useful formulas are given in the next page.

Q1. (a) The correlation function of a wide sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (WSSUS) channel is
given by

(i) Determine the coherence time if .

(ii) Determine whether the channel results in frequency selective fading or flat fading for (a)
and (b) if a signal of bandwidth 4 KHz is transmitted over the channel.
[15]
(b) Derive the expression of path loss in free space wireless communication under two ray ground
propagation model. [10]
(c) The maximum distance between the base station (BS) and the users is 100 m. Determine the
required transmit power at the BS under path loss model if the receivers of the users have sensitivity of -
80 dBm. The path loss exponent of the medium and the far field cross-over distance are assumed to be 4
and 1 m, respectively. The transmitter and receiver antenna gains are assumed to be one. [10]

Q2. (a) By deriving the throughput models, show that the maximum throughput of slotted ALOHA
multiple access technique is twice of the maximum throughput of pure ALOHA multiple access
technique. [12]
(b) Why collision can happen in carrier sense multiple access technique? Compare the throughput
performance among the different types of CSMA MAC protocols with justification. [2+8=10]
(c) Describe the operation of RTS/CTS CSMA/CA MAC protocol. Why the basic CSMA/CA is used
in WLANs instead of the RTS/CTS CSMA/CA MAC protocol. [13]

Q3. (a) In a direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) transmission, binary data of each user is spread by
255 chip sequences. If the required signal to noise ratio of the system is 9.4 dB, what is the jamming
margin of the system? The system loss is assumed to be 1 dB. [8]
(b) Explain the near far problem in CDMA systems. Mention some possible solutions to this
problem. [12]
(c) Show that, in a CDMA system with matched filter detector, the received signal to noise plus
interference (SINR) ratio at a receiver is given by

where the symbols have their usual meanings. The power levels of the received signals from all the other
K-1 users are assumed to be equal. [15]

Q.4 (a) Define near far resistance and asymptotic efficiency. [6]

1
(b) Compare the different MUD techniques in terms of performance and complexity. [9]

(c) Consider a CDMA system where user 1 is transmitting bit “1” to user 2 with chip sequence
[1 -1 -1 1] and user 3 is transmitting bit “0”, i.e., “-1” to user 2 with chip sequence [1 -1 1 1]. The
distances of user 1 to user 2 and user 3 to user 2 are 200 m and 80 m, respectively. The transmit power of
all the users is assumed to be -20 dBm. Determine the received bits by user 2 under (i) matched filter
detector, (ii) linear de-correlator detector and (iii) SIC detector. The noise power at user 2 for both user 1
and user 3 is assumed to be fixed for the bit duration and it is -100 dBm. Assume, path loss model for
wireless propagation. The path loss exponent of the medium and the far field cross-over distance are
assumed to be 3 and 1 m, respectively. The transmitter and receiver antenna gains are assumed to be one.
[20]

Q5. (a) Why OFDM technique is popular in wireless communications? [6]

(b) Draw a block diagram of an OFDM system. Why IFFT/FFT and cyclic prefix are included in
OFDM system? [12]
(c) Explain the timing offset, frequency offset and peak to average power ratio (PARP) problems in
OFDM systems. [9]
(d) Compare between the Selective Mapping and Partial Transmit Sequence approaches in solving the
PARP problem of OFDM system. [8]

Q6. (a) The received SNR per branch or antenna is assumed to be Chi-square distributed random variable
with parameter Γ. Derive the expressions of outage probability and SNR of a receiver with M
antennas/branches when selection diversity is applied. [15]
(b) The average received SNR per branch or antenna is 15 dB. What are the received SNR and
outage probability if selection diversity with 10 antennas is considered at the receiver? [8]
(c) Write a comparison between open loop and close loop transmit diversity. [6]
(d) Write a comparative overview between ZF and MMSE MIMO detection mechanisms. [6]
