DATE OF ASSIGNING : SUBMITTED TO :
NAME : ADARSH KUMAR SINGH
22, AUGUST 2024 AR. ARVIND KR. SINGH
CLASS : V YEAR IX SEMESTER
ROLL NO. : 201331003001
SESSION : 2024-25
DATE OF SUBMISSION :
SUBJECT : ADV. CONST. TECHNIQUES 29, AUGUST 2024
ACTIVE MOB. NO. : 8009380373 REMARKS :
INTRODUCTION TO TYPES OF SPECIAL SLABS:

1. FILLER SLAB
2. WAFFLE OR COFFER SLAB
3. FLAT SLABS
FILLER SLABS :
FILLER SLABS ARE ONE SUCH COST EFFECTIVE ROOFING SYSTEM.

❖ This is an ancient time technology which saves

material and labour cost. Filler slab consume
less concrete and steel as compared to
conventional RCC slabs. RCC roofs becomes
lighters and looks more beautiful due to use of
less-heavy, low cost filler material such as
mangalore tiles, clay pots and broken pieces of
cement blocks.
FILLER SLABS :

PLAN SECTION
FILLER SLABS :
FILLER SLABS :

The slab filled with lighter filler material is known as filler slab.
By reducing the quantity and weight of material the roof become less
expensive yet retains the strength of conventional slab. The most popular
filler material is the roofing

METHODS :
Mangalore tiles are placed between steel ribs and concrete is poured into
the gap to make a filler slab. The structure requires less steel and cement. It
is also a good heat insulator.

The materials are laid in the grid of steel reinforcement rods(6mm to 8 mm

dia.) and concreting is done over them. The concrete mix used is 1:2:4The
grid size depends upon the design, span & material used. For mangalore tiles
(size:23cm*40cm), the grid size is 33cm*50cm. The slab thickness is 10
cm.
FINAL OUTCOME
ADVANTAGES :
▪ It consumes less concrete and steel due to reduced weight of
slab by the introduction of a less heavy , low cost filler materials

▪ It enhances thermal comfort inside the building due to heat

resistant qualities of filler materials and the gap between two
burnt clay tiles

▪ Makes saving on cost of this slab compared to traditional slab

by about 20%

▪ It reduces use of concrete and saves cement and steel by about

40%

WAFFLE OR COFFER SLABS :
❖ The finished Coffer Slab has an appearance
of being waffled and this is why it is also
called the Waffled slab. The waffle slab or
two-way joist slab is a reinforced system
covered with in situ concrete.

❖ A coffer (or coffering) in architecture is a

series of sunken panels in the shape of a
square, rectangle, or octagon in
a ceiling, soffit or vault. A series of these
sunken panels was often used as decoration
for a ceiling or a vault, also
called caissons ("boxes"),
or lacunaria ("spaces, openings"), so that a
coffered ceiling can be called
a lacunar ceiling: the strength of the
structure is in the framework of the
coffers.
WAFFLE OR COFFER SLABS :
WHY TO USE A WAFFLE OR COFFER SLABS :
Coffer or waffle slabs weigh much less than conventional slabs
and can span the same distance if properly reinforced.
The reinforced steel does most of the work and cement is
cast in situ around the reinforced steel system.
The ribs of the coffer slab act as beams spanning in two
directions to help carry the load of the concrete slab.
The cavities between the ribs reduce the weight of the
structure and require a lot less cement.
Section
This process may occur in three different approaches, however the basic
method is the same in each:
•In situ: Formwork construction and pouring of concrete occur on site,
then the slab is assembled (if required).
•Precast: The slabs are made somewhere else and then brought to the
site and assembled.
• Pre-fabricated: The reinforcements are integrated into the slab while
being manufactured, without needing to reinforce the assembly on site.
This is the most expensive option.
TYPES OF WAFFLE OR COFFER SLABS :
A waffle slab is flat on top, while joists create a grid like surface on the bottom.
The grid is formed by the removal of molds after the concrete sets. This
structure was designed to be more solid when used on longer spans and with
heavier loads. This type of structure, because of its rigidity, is recommended for
buildings that require minimal vibration,
like laboratories and manufacturing facilities. It is also used in buildings that
require big open spaces, like theatres or train stations. Waffle slabs are
composed by intricate formwork, and may be more expensive than other types of
slabs, but depending on the project and the quantity of concrete needed it may
be cheaper to build.

There are two types of waffle slab system:

1.One Way Waffle Slab System

2.Two Way Waffle Slab System
ADVANTAGES :
The waffle slab floor system has several advantages:

•Better for buildings that require less vibrations – this is managed by

the two way joist reinforcements that form the grid.
•Bigger spans can be achieved with less material, being more economical
and environmentally friendly
•Some people find the waffle pattern aesthetically pleasing
•Greater load capacity than traditional one-way slabs
•Forms can be implemented with wood, concrete or steel
•If holes are provided between the ribs, building services can be run
through them. One proprietary implementation of this system is called Hole
deck.
DIS-ADVANTAGES :
•Greater quantities of formwork materials are needed, which can be very
costly
•Waffle slabs are thicker than flat slabs, so the height between each floor
must be greater to have enough space for the slab system and other
building services
•Waffle slabs are preferred for flat topographical areas not sloped sites

EXAMPLES :
•Royal National Theatre, London, United Kingdom
•Washington Metro Building
•Logistic and Telecommunication SL, Madrid, Spain
•Barangaroo House, Sydney, Australia
•GS1 Portugal, Lisboa, Portugal
•Galbraith Hall, UC San Diego, California
•ODD House, Quito, Ecuador
•Centro de Bellas Artes de Caguas Parking Garage, Caguas, Puerto Rico
