12 basic rules for safe working
with elevators and escalators

1. I always use proper tools designed for the purpose.

2. I use my personal protective equipment whenever

necessary.

3. I always make myself aware of the particularities of the job

site and check in and out.

4. I always note and use safety barriers.

5. I do not work on energised or rotating parts unless it is

inevitable for fault diagnosis or test.

6. I only use proper and stable ladders and scaffolding.

7. I do not remain under any suspended load.

8. While working at suspension ropes, chains or hydraulic

pipes or cylinders, I never rely on a simple safety device,
but always use a second independent safety device
against suspension failure.

SECTION 1: SYSTEM OVERVIEW

1.1: INTRODUCTION
The Smart lift is a Schindler MRL (machine room-less lift) product which is used for low rise
installations. The Smart uses Bionic control system and should not be confused with other
Schindler MRL products such as the Euro-Lift (Miconic MX-GC) and the Mobile. This manual is
written to assist the training of staff with the Schindler Smart and is intended to improve the
understanding of special design features and faultfinding techniques with the product.
This manual contains the following:
• a system overview describing the basic Smart arrangement
• a description of all the major printed circuit boards (PCBs), including their connections and
LEDs
• an analysis of the diagram architecture where the most important circuits are examined in
greater detail
• an explanation of the Smart communication systems
• a detailed description of all the major components of the lift car including the door
operator, car operating panel (COP) and all switches and inductors used in the position
selector system
• a description of the type of lift machines used with Smart
• a brief description of the different drive systems used
• a set of diagnostic procedures giving guidance on faultfinding and parameter
programming

1.2: SYSTEM ARRANGEMENT

The standard Smart has a 1:1 roping arrangement and geared machine with a maximum speed
of 1.0 m/s (see figure 1.1). The drive can be either a simple two speed system or a VACON
inverter. The maximum travel distance is 25 m with a maximum of 15 stops. The lift car can be
either single opening or through car.

ThyssenKrupp Elevator is a supplier of elevator technology and has no commercial connection to Schindler Ltd. *Schindler and Smart
are registered trade marks of Schindler Ltd. For internal use only.

1.3: DESCRIPTION
The main components of the control system are housed in a landing access panel at the top floor
next to the landing door architrave. If an inverter drive is used it is normally installed in the lift well
next to the geared machine but with the drive diagnostics mounted inside the landing access
panel.

The Smart system uses 2 different communication systems, BIO (Basic Input Output) and CAN
(Control Area Network), both described in more detail later in the manual. The landing pushes
(LOP) are connected to the main control PCB (SMIC) by the BIO bus. The car control system
interface is called SDIC and is connected to the system CPU (SCIC) via the CAN bus. The SDIC
PCB interfaces with a car top test unit, a Car Operating Panel (COP), positional information
switches and the door drive.

Each of the above parts of the control system is described in more detail in the PCB section.

The circuit breaker JTHS protects the supply to the control, safety and main brake circuits. The
415 volt supply, L1AS, L2AS and L3AS become the incoming supply shown on the diagram in
FIGURE 3.2. It shows the different control circuit supplies and identifies the purpose of each supply.

Although the main supply to the SMIC PCB is 415 volts ac there is a neutral supplied to the board
to provide 240 volt for the main brake, fuse protected to 1.6 amps on the SMIC. An on board
bridge rectifier converts the brake supply to dc. The safety circuit is 110 volts ac provided by an
off-board transformer and protected by a 1 amp fuse on the SMIC. The transformer also provides
a 22.1 volts supply for the low voltage control circuits, which in turn is rectified on board the SMIC
to produce the 24 volt dc source used to power all the control PCB’s. The 24 volts dc supply is
protected by a 2.5 amp fuse on the SMIC.

3.2: SAFETY CIRCUIT

The complete safety circuit can be seen in FIGURE 3.3. The primary safety circuit including phase
failure (RKPH), drive contact and various shaft switches terminate at input ISPT on the SMIC.
When the primary safety circuit is made the ISPT LED is ON.

The next components of the safety circuit are the gate lock contacts (KTS), the car gate contact
(KTC), car top test (JREC) and various other car safety switches. The final component is the LAP
electrical recall (ESE). Where this switch is fitted a plug is inserted into XESE and this bridges the
ESE circuit. The final safety circuit input at the SMIC is ISK. When the lock contacts and car safety
circuit are made and the test controls are set to normal, the ISK LED is ON.

The safety circuit is designed so that when JREC is ON, ESE cannot be used and if ESE is ON then
neither can JREC be used.

SECTION 4: LIFT CAR

4.1: DOOR OPERATOR
There a several different models of door operator used with the Smart lift but the Varidor 10 is the
most common and is shown in FIGURE 4.1.

FIGURE 4.1: VARIDOR 10

4.1.1: Door Operator Varidor 10

The Varidor 10 has a three phase motor which is driven from relays on the SDIC. The motor
drives an intermediate pulley by a vee belt. This in turn drives a toothed belt onto which a carrier
is clamped. The carrier links onto the door clutch mounted onto the fast door panel, i.e the
leading panel on a 2 panel side opening door. As it pulls round the end pulley to the fully closed
position a cam (white in the photograph) on the end of the linkage arm retracts the back skate of
the clutch mechanism (SEE FIGURE 4.2).

4.2: COP
The Car Operating Panel or COP (FIGURE 4.4) is used to enter calls, open
and close the doors when at a floor level and to enter an alarm call. The
COP is also the diagnostic interface and can be used to read the fault log
and to read and enter parameters.

When used as the diagnostic interface, the ‘<I>’ button acts as the enter
key on a computer. A complete guide to diagnostics can be found in
SECTION 8 of this manual.

4.2.1: Entering Car Calls

There are two displays on the COP. The larger one at the top (ADIC) is the
position indicator and the smaller one just above the numbers (AZRC) is
the destination indicator. When a number button is touched that number
appears on the AZRC and if the number is a programmed floor position the
lift car will be despatched to that floor. When a number is touched that is
NOT a programmed floor position ‘Er’ will appear on the AZRC and the car
will not go anywhere. The door open ‘<I>’, door close ‘>I<’ and Alarm FIGURE 4.4: COP

SECTION 5: POSITION SELECTOR SYSTEM

5.1: DESCRIPTION
Both Schindler smart variations (2-speed and V3F) use the same inputs for position reference.
The difference between the 2 systems is in the distances apart of the signals.
There are four bi-stable reed switches mounted just below the upper guide shoes on the lift car,
two being mounted either side of each guide rail. The operating magnets are clipped to the guide
rails.

5.3: OPERATIONAL SEQUENCE

The following are descriptions of the travel sequence for synchronisation and normal travel.
5.3.1: Synchronisation Travel
During a synchronisation run (when lift is returned to normal operation) the lift must find the
lowest floor level. If the KSE signal is OFF the lift first travels up until KSE goes ON.

The lift then runs down until the KSE signal turns OFF and stops. It runs down again until the next
KS signal turns ON and stops again. At this point if KSE is ON then the control knows that the
position is at the slowing point into the top floor (SEE FIGURE 5.3). The lift starts again in the down
direction until the KSE signal turns OFF a second time.

If the KSE signal is OFF when the lift stops on a KS signal then the position must be the bottom
floor. The selector is set and the lift goes into normal mode.

5.3.2: Normal Travel

In normal mode the lift travels the shaft
KS KSE KUET KUET1
and counts the KS signals to step the
B E
position. The position steps at the falling
edge of the mid-floor magnet, in
C
advance of the floor position. When the A
D
lift approaches the selected floor and
the KS switches on the falling edge of
the mid-floor magnet, a slow down
signal is given. The lift stops on the A

rising edge of the next KS signal at floor E

B
level.

A
As the lift approaches a terminal floor
forced slow down is activated when the
KSE signal is switched OFF. The lift
stops at the next KS signal. If the KSE
A
signal is ON again when the lift is at
floor level then the control knows that it B E

is at the top floor. If the KSE signal

remains low then it is at the bottom. A

SECTION 6: LIFT MACHINE

6.1: DESCRIPTION
FIGURE 6.1 shows the main drive machine of the
Smart lift. This is a conventional vertical flange
mounted geared machine and is fitted to a
guide mounted bracket in the lift shaft.
The normal drive and braking power is supplied
via contactors in the LAP. If a VACON inverter is
used it is normally mounted in the lift shaft.
The traction sheave is wrapped 180º providing
a 1:1 roping arrangement to a cantilever lift car.
All controls for emergency hand-winding of the
machine are also mounted in the LAP.

SECTION 7: DRIVES
There are two types of drive used with the Smart system, 2-speed and VVVF inverter. The same
geared machine is used irrespective of which type of drive is being used.

7.1: 2-SPEED
With the 2-speed drive system there are 4 contactors that control direction and speed, all fitted in
the LAP. There are no buffer resistors fitted to the system so the ride is quite basic. Contactors
SR-U and SR-D reverse phases to reverse the direction of the motor while SH1 is the high speed
contactor and SFA is the levelling contactor. The contactors are controlled by pilot relays on the
SMIC and are interlocked for electrical safety.

7.2: VACON
The VVVF drive system that Schindler use for their Smart
product is most commonly a VACON CXS and is usually
mounted in the lift shaft. Two different versions of the drive are
used, 5.5 kW and 7.5 kW. Schindler call this VF 10 and 20 BR
respectively.

FIGURE 7.1 shows a Schindler ‘Variodyn VF 20 BR’ drive unit

which is a standard VACON product. The unit normally has a
diagnostic interface mounted on its front side, Schindler mount
this unit in the LAP and connect it via a standard modem cable.
FIGURE 7.1: VF 20 BR DRIVE

The standard VACON interface is very user friendly and can be used to:
• Monitor drive information, voltage, current, etc.
• Program drive parameters
• Read the fault history

SECTION 8: DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES

8.1: RUNNING THE CAR FROM THE LANDING ACCESS PANEL
To carry out periodic test procedures etc it may be necessary to run the lift from the top to the
bottom of the shaft without allowing the doors to open and passengers to enter the car. This can
be done from the landing access panel at the top landing level.

The following procedure will run the car up and down with car and landing calls isolated. The
doors will open at the top floor but not at the bottom. Car and landing calls will be isolated.

1. Turn DIP switch 7 on the CPU board SCIC to the ON position.

2. The LED “TRIP 2” will illuminate.
3. The lift will run to the top floor and open its doors.
4. Use pushbutton DC-U/D (for SMIC1) or DFM-U/D (for SMIC2) to despatch the car to the
bottom floor.
5. Monitor the LEDs “RRU” and “RRD” to determine when the car is running and that it has
stopped.
6. When the car has finished its down travel at the bottom level use the same pushbutton to
run the car to the top floor.
7. Turn DIP switch 7 on SCIC board OFF to return to normal operation.
8. The LED “TRIP 2” will turn off and the car returns to normal service.

8.2: PERFORMING A SHAFT LEARN

It may become necessary to perform a shaft learn in order to write the shaft information into the
controller memory.

This may be required to reset certain faults, either because shaft switch positions have been
changed or the stored information has become corrupted. Information collected by the controller
during a shaft learn includes number of floors and the positions of shaft signals.

The shaft learn is performed by the following procedure:

1. Turn ON DIP switch 8 of the CPU board SCIC.
2. Wait until LEDs W_DOG, DRIVE and ERROR start to flash.
3. Turn OFF DIP switch 8. The three LEDs should continue to flash.
4. Press the RESET button on the CPU board SCIC.
5. After 15-20 seconds the car will do a recovery run to the bottom floor.
6. Approx 5s after arriving at the bottom floor the car will do a high speed run to the top floor.
7. Approx 5s after arriving at the top floor the car will do a high speed run to the bottom floor.
8. 2-3 seconds after arriving at the bottom floor the LEDs should stop flashing.
9. The car will automatically return to service.

8.3: READING PARAMETERS

Reading the parameter list is essential because any replacement CPU board SCIC will need to be
programmed with the original site parameters. A record of parameter values should be made and
kept for future reference.

Accessing the parameter list is done by setting the system into configuration mode and using the
displays and pushbuttons on the Car Operating Panel (COP). While in configuration mode the car
will park at the top floor level with its doors open enabling access to both the COP and the
Landing Access Panel (LAP).

The COP has two displays, car position indicator (ADIC) and car destination indicator (AZRC).
These can be used in conjunction with the door open button “<I>” and the minus button “-” to
view the parameter settings of the car.

8.5: CHANGING FLOOR DESIGNATIONS

It may become necessary to change the floor designation shown by the position indicators and
announced by the speech synthesizer. This can be done by changing the parameter of the lowest
floor to the required value. The other floors are updated automatically in increments of one.

In cases where the floor designations do not increment by one (for example when the lift serves
only even floor numbers) enter the floor designations starting with the lowest level. For each
entry, the designations of the floors above are only automatically incremented by 1.

For example, for a 5 stop lift car serving two basement levels, the bottom floor designation is “-
2”.
1. Using procedure “8.3: READING PARAMETERS” find CF = 1; PA = 1. Press “<I>” to see the
value on the lower display. “UL” will be displayed on the upper display; the current value on
the lower.
2. Using the numeric keypad enter the floor number (keys “-“, and “2”). The new value will
appear on the lower display.
3. Press “<I>” to enter the new value.
4. Press “-“, followed by “<I>” to toggle the lift back into service.
5. Ride the car to check the position indicator and voice announcements.
6. If everything is satisfactory go to step 10.
7. Press “-“, followed by “<I>” to toggle the lift back into CF mode.
8. Make any further changes to the parameter values that are necessary.
9. Repeat steps 4 and 5 to check the changes.
