Module Lesson 2 COMMUNICATION AND GLOBALIZATION

Learning Outcomes:
1. Explain how cultural and global issues effect globalization;
Lesson 2 Outline:
1. What is globalization?
2. Impacts of Globalization on Communication
3. Impacts of Globalization on Global Communication

I. What is Globalization?

Globalization is the process of interaction and integration among people, companies, and
governments of different nations. This process is driven by international trade, investment, and is
facilitated by technological advancements, especially in information technology. Globalization
has widespread impacts on different sectors such as:

 The environment: Increased industrial activity and trade lead to environmental

challenges like pollution and resource depletion.
 Culture: Cultures around the world increasingly influence each other through media,
trade, migration, and travel, leading to cultural exchange and sometimes the loss of local
traditions.
 Political systems: Governments often collaborate, negotiate trade deals, or engage in
international diplomacy, but they can also face tensions due to global issues like
immigration or economic competition.
 Economic development: Globalization has enabled countries to access broader markets
and resources, which can lead to economic growth but also to disparities between rich
and poor nations.
 Human well-being: The increased availability of goods, services, and information can
improve living standards but also raise concerns about inequality, labor exploitation, and
public health.

II. Impacts of Globalization on Communication

Globalization has dramatically reshaped communication. As people from different cultural and
geographic backgrounds interact more frequently, communication processes adapt to these new
challenges and opportunities.

1. Virtual Interaction:
Advances in technology allow people from different parts of the world to communicate instantly
through video calls, emails, messaging apps, and social media. This virtual interaction has
removed geographical barriers and enabled real-time collaboration across borders, but it also
requires skills in managing online communication tools and etiquette.

2. Cultural Awareness in Speech:

When communicating globally, people must become more sensitive to cultural differences in
speech. For example, idiomatic expressions or informal language that works in one culture may
not be understood or could be offensive in another. Developing awareness of cultural nuances in
language helps ensure more effective communication.

3. Cultural Awareness in Body Language:

Non-verbal communication varies significantly across cultures. For instance, maintaining eye
contact is a sign of confidence in some cultures but may be considered rude or aggressive in
others. People communicating in a global context need to be aware of these differences to avoid
misunderstandings.

4. Time Differences:
Communicating across different time zones is a common challenge in global communication.
Scheduling meetings, deadlines, and responding promptly can be difficult when working with
people in different parts of the world. Effective global communicators manage time differences
by using tools and strategies like scheduling apps and asynchronous communication.

III. Impacts of Globalization on Global Communication

Globalization has far-reaching effects on how information is shared, business is conducted, and
how people connect socially across the world.

1. Availability of Information:
The internet has made information widely accessible, enabling people to share knowledge and
stay updated on global events. However, this can also lead to information overload, and it
becomes crucial to develop skills in evaluating the reliability and relevance of information from
various sources.

2. Business Conduct:
Globalization has altered how businesses operate, especially in communication practices. Cross-
cultural communication in business settings requires a focus on cultural sensitivity, negotiation
styles, and the ability to adapt to different business practices and protocols around the world.

3. Social Awareness:
As the world becomes more connected, people are increasingly exposed to diverse viewpoints,
social movements, and global issues. Social awareness through global communication helps
foster empathy and understanding but can also highlight social inequalities or trigger cultural
conflicts.
4. The Problem:
One of the key challenges of globalization is dealing with the downside of increased
interconnectedness, such as the digital divide, cultural homogenization, or the spread of
misinformation. Communicating in a global context requires not only technological tools but
also critical thinking to navigate these problems effectively.

Conclusion:

Globalization has transformed the way we communicate, interact, and operate on a global scale.
As individuals and businesses become more interconnected, the ability to communicate
effectively across cultures becomes crucial. Globalization has brought about both opportunities
and challenges in communication:

 Opportunities: It has enabled virtual interaction, improved access to information, and

opened the door to cross-cultural exchange, allowing businesses to expand their reach
and individuals to connect with people from diverse backgrounds.
 Challenges: However, it also requires increased cultural awareness in both verbal and
non-verbal communication, the ability to navigate time differences, and the critical skill
of discerning reliable information in a sea of global data.
