1 Define static indeterminacy of structures. CO502.1 [2] [K1]
Statically indeterminate structures are structures that cannot be analyzed using
statics, or equations of equilibrium only; they require other material properties. The
degree of indeterminacy is the number of unknown reactions minus the number of
equations of equilibrium.
2 Write the principle of virtual work. CO502.1 [2] [K1]
The principle of virtual work states that in equilibrium the virtual work of the
forces applied to a system is zero. Newton's laws state that at equilibrium the
applied forces are equal and opposite to the reaction, or constraint forces. This
means the virtual work of the constraint forces must be zero as well.
3 Differentiate perfect and imperfect frame. CO502.1 [2] [K2]
A deficient frame is an imperfect frame, in which the no. of members are less than
(2j – 3). A redundant frame is an imperfect frame, in which the no. of members are
more than (2j – 3).
4 What are the assumptions and limitations made in slope-deflection method? CO502.3 [2] [K2]
i) Between each pair of the supports the beam section is constant.
The joint in structure may rotate or deflect as a whole, but the angles between the
members meeting at that joint remain the same.
5 List out the use of slope deflection method. CO502.2 [2] [K2]
This method is ideally suited for the analysis of continuous beams and rigid jointed
frames. Using this method basic unknowns like slopes and deflections of joints can
be calculated. Moments at the ends of a member is first written in terms of
unknown slopes and deflections of the end joints.
6 What are the causes for sway in portal frames? CO502.1 [2] [K2]
Causes of side sway : 1 Unsymmetrical loading (eccentric loading) 2
Unsymmetrical out-line of portal frame 3 Different end conditions of the columns
of the portal frame . 4 Non-uniform sections (M.I.) of the members of the frame. 5
Horizontal loading on the columns of the frame.
7 Differentiate between distribution factors and carry over factor. CO502.3 [2] [K2]
Distribution factor:
When several members meet at a joint and a moment is applied at the
joint to produce
rotationwithouttranslationofthemembers,themomentisdistributedamongallthe
members meeting at that joint proportionate to their stiffness.
Distributionfactor=Relativestiffness/Sumofrelativestiffnessatthejoint
Carry over factor:
A moment applied at the hinged end B“carries over”to the fixed end A, a
moment equal to half the amount of applied moment and of the same
rotational sense.
C.O =0.5
8 Write down the slope deflection equation for a beam CD fixed at C and D CO502.2 [2] [K2]
subjected to a settlement δ at D.
9 What is the limitation of slope-deflection equations applied in structural analysis? CO502.2 [2] [K1]
i) It is not easy to account for varying member sections.
ii) It becomes very cumber some when the unknown displacements are
large in number.
10 What is sway correction? CO502.2 [2] [K1]
