PASSIVE PROCESSES
Passive transport is the fundamental movement of ions and other molecular substances
within the cells along the concentration gradient, without any external energy.

OSMOSIS
Osmosis is a passive process and happens without any
expenditure of energy.

Osmosis is a process by which the molecules of a

solvent pass from a solution of low concentration to a
solution of high concentration through a semi-
permeable membrane. https://images.app.goo.gl/E6YFznHGQiFUQ4C3A

Semi-permeable membrane is
permeable to water, but not to sugar

SIMPLE DIFFUSION
Simple di usion is the process by which molecules, ions,
or atoms move from an area of higher concentration to
an area of lower concentration without the help of
transporter proteins.
For solutes that are small and non-polar.
Example: O 2 , CO2 , small fatty acids
From high concentration
to low concentration

FACILITATED DIFFUSION
Facilitated di usion is a type of passive transport that uses
specialized proteins, such as channel proteins and carrier
proteins, to help molecules move across a cell membrane.

It moves polar and charged molecules, such as amino acids,

carbohydrates, nucleosides, and ions.
It is of two types: https://images.app.goo.gl/mGJHp299zjkpEMjF7

1. CHANNEL MEDIATED — Movement of ions or small molecules moves across the

membrane through water lled channel like GATED CHANNEL (only opens due to a
stimulus) or LEAK CHANNEL (continuously open). Eg. Na+

1. CARRIER MEDIATED — Movement of small polar molecules across the membrane such as
simple sugar or simple carbohydrates and amino acids by changing its shape with the
help of a carrier protein. Eg. glucose
ACTIVE TRANSPORT
Active Transport is de ned as a process that involves the
movement of molecules from a region of lower
concentration to a region of higher concentration against
a gradient or an obstacle with the use of external energy.

It is of two types :

PRIMARY ACTIVE TRANSPORT https://images.app.goo.gl/ebviR8MGQY7jqj2D9

Cellular protein pumps called ION PUMPS move ions

across the membrane against their concentration gradient.
Eg. SODIUM-POTASSIUM PUMP

3 Na⁺ (in)+2 K⁺ (out)+ATP→3 Na⁺ (out)+2 K⁺ (in)+ADP+Pi

SECONDARY ACTIVE TRANSPORT
This involves movement of substances against its concentration gradient by using energy
provided by the movement of a second substance down its concentration gradient.
PROVIDES
HIGH LOW ENERGY FOR
LOW HIGH

It is divided into two types: https://images.app.goo.gl/DYxxQbz3UiSUmGM56

SYMPORT — It involves movement of two substances

in the same direction.

ANTIPORT — It involves movement of two substances

in the opposite direction.
VESICULAR TRANSPORT
It involves transport of large substances across the plasma membrane by a vesicle which is a
membrane bound sac lled with materials.
Eg. proteins, large carbohydrate polysaccharides
It is divided in two types: https://images.app.goo.gl/e13wEUn7qp7DCSeBA

EXOCYTOSIS
It is a cellular process that involves the release of large
molecules and waste from a cell's cytoplasm to the
outside of the cell.
At the end, vesicle membrane becomes part of the
plasma membrane
ENDOCYTOSIS
It is a cellular process that allows cells to bring in substances, such as uids,
macromolecules, and particles, from outside the cell.
It can be divided into 3 types:
Phagocytosis Pinocytosis Receptor mediated
endocytosis
