TRANSPORT
PASSIVE PROCESSES
Passive transport is the fundamental movement of ions and other molecular substances
within the cells along the concentration gradient, without any external energy.
OSMOSIS
Osmosis is a passive process and happens without any
expenditure of energy.
Semi-permeable membrane is
permeable to water, but not to sugar

SIMPLE DIFFUSION
Simple di usion is the process by which molecules, ions,
or atoms move from an area of higher concentration to
an area of lower concentration without the help of
transporter proteins.
For solutes that are small and non-polar.
Example: O 2 , CO2 , small fatty acids

to low concentration

FACILITATED DIFFUSION
Facilitated di usion is a type of passive transport that uses
specialized proteins, such as channel proteins and carrier
proteins, to help molecules move across a cell membrane.
1. CARRIER MEDIATED — Movement of small polar molecules across the membrane such as
simple sugar or simple carbohydrates and amino acids by changing its shape with the
help of a carrier protein. Eg. glucose
ACTIVE TRANSPORT
Active Transport is de ned as a process that involves the
movement of molecules from a region of lower
concentration to a region of higher concentration against
a gradient or an obstacle with the use of external energy.
It is of two types :

EXOCYTOSIS
It is a cellular process that involves the release of large
molecules and waste from a cell's cytoplasm to the
outside of the cell.
At the end, vesicle membrane becomes part of the
plasma membrane
ENDOCYTOSIS
It is a cellular process that allows cells to bring in substances, such as uids,
macromolecules, and particles, from outside the cell.
It can be divided into 3 types:
Phagocytosis Pinocytosis Receptor mediated
endocytosis
