SCIENCE
Quarter 2 – Module 4&5:
Different Characteristics of Vertebrates &
Invertebrates

Self-Learning Module
In this kit, the pupils will gain knowledge about the distinguishing
characteristics of vertebrates and invertebrates.
This will guide you as you learn new ideas and enrich your existing knowledge
about vertebrates and invertebrates. The varied activities will help and guide you to
look for the answer to your questions about the things happening around you.

1
Objectives:
1. Identify the distinguishing characteristics of vertebrates
and invertebrates
2. Make an inventory of vertebrates and invertebrates that
are commonly seen in the community
Learning Competency:
Determine the distinguishing characteristics of vertebrates
and invertebrates

Direction: Look at the word chart below. Follow instructions 1 to

5 until only two words are left uncrossed in the chart.
1. Cross out the words that consist of five or less letters.
2. Cross out all the words that begin with letter S
3. Cross out contractions ( for example, can’t)
4. Cross out all words that has letter O in column 2.
5. Cross out words that consist of 8 to 10 letters.
OIL DOESN’T CORAL
THE INVERTEBRATES ANNELIDS
AIR ACID DON’T
SPONGES MOLLUSKS PREVENTION
REPTILES RED THOUGH
NOISE CORALS POLLUTION
WON’T SICK VERTEBRATES
FLASH FLOOD BIRDS MIXTURES
FOG ARTHROPODS SMOKING
AMPHIBIANS SMOKE COLLOIDS
Guide questions:
1. What are the two words left uncrossed from the chart?
2. What are invertebrates? Can you give examples?
3. What are vertebrates? Give examples.

1
4. Are you familiar with the 8-10 letter words that you
crossed out in the chart?

• Animals with back bone are called vertebrates

• There are five classes of vertebrates - mammals, fishes, reptiles,

amphibians and birds.

• Amphibians are group of animals that begin their life in the water and
breathe through their gills. Later, they develop lungs and are able to live on
land.

• Reptiles have dry waterproof scales as body covering. They spend most of
their lives on land and lay eggs with leathery shells in water.

• Birds are warm blooded vertebrates that lay eggs and have feathers.

• Mammals are the most complex vertebrate animals. They are warm blooded
animals with highly developed brains, a four-chambered heart, hair, mammary
glands, and specialized teeth.

• Fishes are vertebrate groups with streamlined bodies covered with scales.
They have fins and tail that enable them to swim.

• Animals without backbone are called invertebrates.

• There are several groups of invertebrates according to their distinct

characteristics.
Ex: Mollusk, Cnidarians, Flatworms,
Echinoderms, Corals, Roundworms

2
A. Where I Belong
Identify the animal in each picture and write its name in the proper column.

3
Vertebrates Invertebrates

B.

Direction: Identify if the following animals are invertebrates or vertebrates. Write

your answer on your answer sheet.

1. dog 7. rat
3. grasshopper 8. coral
4. bee 9. flies
5. octopus 10.cockroach

4
Direction: Fill in the bubbles with animals that are commonly seen in the
community.

Guessing Time!
Direction: Identify the animals based on the given descriptions. Write your answers
for 1-5 on the first column and the 6-10 on the second column.

1. man’s best friend that feeds its baby with milk

2. crawls on the house ceiling and has dry scale body covering
3. flies, lay eggs and has feathers
4. lives in the water and has scales, fins and tail that enable it to swim
5. lives in water and on land that has soft body and is noisy during rainy days
6. small creature with 8 thin legs that catches insects in a web

7. flying insect with colourful wings that makes nectar on flowers

8. a small slow moving animal that has a soft wet body covered with a round
shell
9. flat star shape creature with 5 arms that lives on the sea
10. a sea creature with 5 pairs of legs and a round flat body covered with a shell

Vertebrates Invertebrates

Guide Question: What characteristics are common among the animals in each
column? __________________________________________________________

5
Animals with backbones!
Mammals
Mammals are animals that have hair, are warm blooded, and drink milk when they
are babies.

Birds
Birds are warm blooded, have wings, feathers, a beak, and their babies hatch from
eggs.

Reptiles
Reptiles have scales, breathe air, are cold blooded, and usually lay eggs on land.

Amphibians
Amphibians spend part of their lives in water and part on land and they are cold
blooded.

Fish
Fish lives in water, have gills to breathe, scales and fins on their bodies, and are
cold blooded.

6
Animals without backbones!
Echinoderms
Spiny sea creatures
(starfish, sea urchin)

Annelid worms
Segmented bodies
(earthworms, leeches)

Arthropods
have external skeleton and jointed limbs
Insects
Wings, 3 body parts, 6 legs, 2 antennae
(ladybird, beetle, butterfly)

Arachnids
Eight legs, no antennae, no wings , lay eggs
( Spider, scorpion, mites)

Crustaceans
Two pairs of antennae, hard exoskeleton,
(crabs, lobsters, shrimps)

7
Direction: Classify the following animals as Mammal, Bird, Reptile, Amphibian or
. Fish. Write their names in the appropriate bubbles.
shark eagle toad pig
dog cow monkey dove
dolphin turtle goat snake
whale salamander kingfisher lizard

Vertebrates

Mammals Fishes

Reptiles

Birds Amphibians

8
Direction: Complete the concept map by giving the characteristics of the animals in
the pictures.

Invertebrates

9
Animals are classified into vertebrates and invertebrates.
Vertebrates are animals with backbones while invertebrates
are animals without backbones.
The basis of its classification is according to it’s distinguish
characteristics.
Vertebrates includes mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and
fishes. Invertebrates are annelids, mollusks, arthropods and
cnidarians.
It is important to familiarize and be knowledgeable to know
some of the animals found in our environment as a steward of
this beautiful place to live in.
