1. Introduction
Businesses are now increasingly using statistical techniques to convert data into information,
which helps in appropriate decision making. This paper, in Decision Sciences area, prepares the
students understanding and appreciating the essential concepts and applications, with focus on relevant
tools and techniques.

2. Intended learning outcomes (ILO)


To help management students appreciate the relevance and importance of the use of quantified/
statistical facts, in the process of decision-making in the ever changing business environment.
To discuss and apply basic statistical tools and techniques, which are useful in every area of business.

3. Course content

 Role of Statistical Data, Summary & Descriptive Statistics


o Measures of Central Tendency
o Measures of Dispersion, Coefficient. of variation
 Probability & Probability Distributions
o Discrete Probability distributions: Binomial & Poisson distributions
o Continuous Probability Distribution: Normal Distribution, Using Standard Normal Probability
Distribution table
 Sampling Concepts (What, why and how sampling made; types: Prob. & non-prob. Sampling)
 Estimation:
o Introduction, Point Estimates, Interval Estimates, Confidence Intervals (applications & concepts
only);
 Testing Hypotheses:
o One-Sample Tests
o Two-Sample Tests
o Chi-Square as a Test for independence
 Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)

Evaluation Plan: Total 100 marks


1. Mid-Semester Examination: 20 marks, (compulsory, as a core courses)
2. End-Semester Examination: 40 marks (University Exam.);
3. Quiz: 10 (2 in Pre-Mid Sem.) + 10 (2 in Post-Mid Sem.) = 20 marks;
4. Class Participation: 10 marks (includes a surprise test/ presentation);
5. Assignments: 10 marks (minimum 5 assignments + 2 Comp. practical).
