ZOOV111 Practical 1: Introduction to Animal Diversity TOTAL: 76 Marks

Introduction
Studying the diversity of life is much like learning a new language. In this week’s practical, you will familiarise
yourself with important terminology and concepts relevant to the study of animal diversity. Ensure that you
know these definitions as well as the correct use of the terms addressed below. Tasks 1 and 2 must be
completed and submitted in class for marking in PRAC BOOK. Tasks 3 to 5 will be completed on MOODLE
(make sure you know the password to log in to the ZOOV111 module site).

Task 1 (Complete in BOOK):

1.1. We can construct a dichotomous key to help us differentiate among and identify different species. A
dichotomous key consists of a series of consecutive two-option (i.e. dichotomous) questions/statements that
lead you to the correct identification of an organism. These keys can be based on morphological (e.g.
symmetry, shape, texture) or other characteristics of a suite of species. Study the material provided, species A
to D, and create your own dichotomous key. Ensure your key includes all the species (species A to D). (4)

1.2) Now study the material A-F and key out the species using the dichotomous key below. (3)

Task 2 (BOOK)
Read the abstract of the journal article (Soares et al. 2017, Marine Biology 164:9) provided, and answer this
this question: Do hybrid turtles produce sterile offspring? Explain your answer. (4)

Task 3 (complete on MOODLE):

3.1. Report the classification system for each of the following animals (Kingdom Animalia) using all the
taxonomic levels provided below: lion; American beaver; black-backed jackal; house cat; honey badger;
African elephant; common ostrich (NOTE: Spelling is important!) (7 x 6)
a) Phylum
b) Class
c) Order
d) Family
e) Genus
f) Species
3.2. Arrange (list) these species in order of their taxonomic similarity, from the most to least similar, starting
with the house cat. (4)

Task 4 (MOODLE):
4.1. Provide the correct scientific names of the following animal species: (3)
i. Leatherback turtle
ii. Olive Ridley turtle
iii. Kemp’s Ridley turtle

4.2. Write the species names in 4.1. in their abbreviated form. (3)

Task 5 (MOODLE)
5.1. Define the following terms: (6)
i. Biodiversity
ii. Taxonomy
iii. Phylogeny
iv. Autotroph
v. Saprotroph
vi. Ecological species
5.2. Provide the appropriate terminology for the following definitions / statements: s (7)
i. The number of species in a given area or region.
ii. If Porifera is a phylum, then Chordata, Echinodermata and Mollusca is a group of ______.
iii. Species that existed in the past, but not in the present day are extinct; species that exist in the
present day are called ______.
iv. The plural form of the term “species”.
v. Organisms that obtain nutrition from organic compounds produced by other organisms.
vi. One genus, many _______ (plural of “genus”).
vii. The system of arranging taxa (species, families, orders, etc.) according to derived or primitive
characteristics to reflect phylogenetic relationships.
