Week Thirteen: Evaluating Health Clubs, Equipment, Media and
Internet Material
This week, you will read and answer questions about evaluating fitness resources.
Your fitness activities will include your choice of activities from your personal plan.

Day One: Health Clubs and Exercise Equipment

Before You Read
If buying a membership at a local gym is not possible due to expense or other reasons, what solutions can you
come up with for working out?
Read
Read pages 353–355 in the Fitness for Life textbook. Answer the following questions in your Fitness Notebook as
you read.
1. How can you avoid the problems of having to pay for a long-term gym membership?

2. How could joining a club that caters mostly to bodybuilding for adults cause a problem situation?

3. What are three things to think about before investing in expensive exercise equipment?

4. Where can you turn for information to help you think critically about what exercise machine suits your needs?

Get Moving
Spend at least 30 minutes completing the following:
Choose any physical activity to perform. Be sure to properly warm up before the activity and cool down afterward.
Select an activity such as jogging, lifting weights, playing a sport, or another activity where you are continually
moving for at least 30 minutes.
Fitness Notebook
On a clean page of your Fitness Notebook, write today’s date and then write two goals you have for personal
fitness.
Reflect – When you completed the “Get Moving” activity today, review your fitness goals. Are you close to
reaching some?
Next, think critically about this scenario and problem-solve a reasonable solution based on what you read in this
lesson. A high school student wants to improve lower body strength and speed for track season. Her parents tell
her a gym membership or expensive equipment is not an option. What are her options for achieving her fitness
goals?
When complete, return to the lesson, check your reading, and take your lesson quiz.

that he thought were reliable are really advertisements selling unproven supplements. How can he avoid this?
Make a list of tips for what types of resources he should stay away from using and why.
