should have a dropped heading at the 2” mark. Subsequent pages should not be dropped except

Level 4 Subheading
Select “Normal” in Styles to enter your Level 4 Subheading. It is left justified, headline
style, regular text. After entering your title, hit the tab button to start your paragraph with a ½”
indent and continue writing in “Normal” text for the body of the paragraph. Starting with the
second page, the page number is placed in the top right corner.
Footnotes are indented ½” and single spaced with one blank line space between each
note. A footnote directing you to the citation guidelines in The SBL Handbook of Style is here as
an example.1 The second example is the chapter on footnotes in the Chicago Manual of Style.2
Finally, Kate Turabian’s chapter on citations from A Manual for Writers of Research Papers,
Theses, and Dissertations is included as well.3 Quoted material of five lines or more is formatted
as a left justified block quotation with an indentation of ½”. For all formatting issues not
addressed in the PhD in Biblical Studies Style Guide, remember to first consult The SBL
Handbook of Style, followed by the Chicago Manual of Style or Kate Turabian’s manual.
Please also take note of the bibliography format. The capitalized, centered title begins at
the dropped 2” margin. After the title and a double-spaced line entry, the bibliography notes
begin at the far left margin. Subsequent lines are indented ½”. The entries are single-spaced with
one blank line space between each entry. The page number is centered at the bottom of the page.
This bibliography was created using the features in the References tab in Word. Minor changes
were made manually to match the formatting guidelines for SBL student research papers.
