Full Marks : 60
Time : 3 Hours
THEORY : C9T
Answer any two questions. 2u15
1. (a) Deduce the expression for the Compton shift. Estimate its highest
value. Show graphically how does shift change with scattering angle.
D
(b) X-ray of wavelength 0.712 A collide with Carbon scatter. If the
scattering particle is an electron, what will be the wavelength of the
scattered X-ray in the direction of 90° ? What happens if the scattering
agent is the whole carbon atom ?
2
(c) Explain the origin of broadening of spectral lines from HUP of energy-
time.
§ d ·
(f) Find the eigen function of the operator ¨ x ¸ in terms of eigen value

O. (3+1)+2+2+2+2+3
(b) Let \1, \2, and \3, are three solutions of a degenerate state of energy
E. Prove that if the solutions are lineraly independent, their linear
combination is also a solution having same energy value.
(5+2+2+2)+4
(c) Describe the liquid drop model of the nucleus. Point out its usefulness
and limitations in understanding the nuclear phenomena.
(2+2+3)+2+(4+2)
(b) The half-lives of radium and radon are 1622 years and 3.825 days.
What is the volume of radon gas at N.T.P. equivalent to one curie ?
(1+1+3+2)+3
PRACTICAL : C9P
1. Describe with proper circuit diagram, the theoretical basis of the Planck
constant measurement using a filament bulb.
3. How can you determine the wavelength of a given laser light using plane
diffraction grating ? Deduce the formula you use.
