Q.2 An alpha particle and a proton are accelerated through the same potential difference .
Find the ratio of their de- Broglie wavelengths.

Q.3 The equivalent wavelength of moving electron has the same value as that of a photon of
energy 6 x 10-17J. Calculate the momentum of the electron.

Q.4 The given graph shows the variation of photoelectric current vs potential for two
different photosensitive materials and for two different intensities of the incident radiation .
Identify the pair of curves that correspond to different materials but same intensity of incident
radiation .

Q.5 Given below is a graph between frequency and kinetic energy of emitted photoelectrons.
Find the values of (i) threshold frequency, (ii) work function from the graph.

Q.6 In the study of a photoelectric effect the graph between

the stopping potential V and frequency ν of the incident
radiation on two different metals P and Q is shown in :

(i) Which one of the two has higher threshold frequency ?

(ii) Determine the work function of the metal which has

greater value .

ADVANCED QUESTIONS
Q.1 Define intensity of radiation on the basis of photon picture of light . Write its SI unit ?

Q.2 Electrons are emitted from a photosensitive surface when it is illuminated by green light

the surface is illuminated by : (i) red light, and (ii) blue light?

Q.3 Ultraviolet light is incident on two photosensitive materials having work functions W1
and W2 (W1 > W2). In which case will the kinetic energy of the emitted electrons be greater ?
Why?

Q.4 Two metals M1 and M2 have work functions 2eV and 4eV respectively. Which of the two
has a higher threshold wavelength for photoelectric emission?

Q.5 The energy of a photon of wavelength λ is

(a) hc λ (b) hc/ λ (c) λ/hc (d) λh/c.

Q.6 Which one of the following metals does not exhibit emission of electrons from its surface
when irradiated by visible light ?

(a) Rubidium (b) Sodium (c) Cadmium (d) Caesium .

Q.7 The work function of a photosensitive surface is 3.315 eV . The cut off wavelength for
photoemission of electron from this surface is

X-rays of wavelengths ƛ fall on a photosensitive surface, emitting electrons. Assuming
that the work function of the surface can be neglected, prove that the de-broglie
wavelength of electrons emitted will be √hƛ/2mc.

Q.12 Why de-Broglie waves associated with a moving football not visible? The
wavelength ƛ, of a photon and the de-Broglie wavelength of an electron have the same
value. Show that the energy of the photon is 2ƛmc/h times the kinetic energy of the
electron, where m,c, and h have their usual meanings.
