System Overview
1.1 Overview
This system is a radar system for vessels that complies with the performance
standards of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The system consists
of a scanner unit for transmitting and receiving radio waves, a transmitter-receiver
unit that generates signals for transmission and amplifies received signals, and a
display unit that removes unwanted waves and displays the radar image.
The radio waves transmitted via the system's magnetron transmitter are pulse
modulated waves in either 3 GHz (S band) or 9.4 GHz (X band).
In addition to the basic radar functions, the system features a number of functions

SERVICE MANUAL Section > 2.System Configulation
The +12Vp power supply operates even when the operating unit is turned off.
This power supply is used in functions such as the control circuit of the power supply
circuit and the inter switch control function.
When the power switch of the operating unit is turned on, the power supply used in the
system is activated and outputs power at the following voltages: +5V/
+3.3V/+12V/-12V. The AC power supply output relay for the monitor comes on and the
system starts. The +5V/+3.3V voltages are used primarily by the control circuit ICs.
The +12V/-12V voltages are primarily used in the external interface circuit.
The +48V power supply and the AC output relay for the antenna motor are turned on
and off independently of the power for the system itself. When the scanner unit power
on control signal is input from the inter switch unit from the inter switch function, the
+48V power supply and the AC output relay for the antenna motor come on. Where the
inter switch function is not used, these actions are linked to the power switch of the
operating unit. The +48V power supply is used in the internal control circuit of the
scanner unit and in the transmitter-receiver unit.
Each power supply output has output over current protection, so that if there is a short
circuit of the load or the rated output is exceeded, protective functions are activated and
shut down the output.
The system is equipped with a function to provide notification when the ship's AC
power supply is shut off. Connecting the system to the ship's battery (24V) makes it
possible for an alarm to be sounded from the operating unit when the ship's AC power
supply is shut down.

2-6
SERVICE MANUAL Section > 2.System Configulation
When the +48V power supply in the display unit starts, the power supply circuit in the
transmitter-receiver unit activates and power is supplied to the circuits in the scanner
unit and the transmitter-receiver unit. Once the power supply starts, the CPU in the
interface circuit starts and perform initial settings. Then the preheating of the magnetron
begins, and the transmitter-receiver unit waits for a communication signal to be sent
from the display unit. When it receives the communication signal from the display unit,
a communication link is established, and the scanner unit and the transmitter-receiver
unit are subsequently controlled from the display unit.
While the magnetron is preheating, the interface circuit sets the operation of the various
circuits in the transmitter-receiver unit according to the initial setting values it receives
from the display unit. When the preheating is complete, the transmitter-receiver unit
notifies the display unit. When the user performs the operation to start transmission, the
display unit sends the transmission start command via the communication line and the
transmitter-receiver unit starts the rotation of the antenna motor and begins
transmission.
A transmission timing pulse is generated in the interface circuit, which is input to the
modulator switching circuit for high voltage switching. The pulse transformer further
increases the voltage of the high-voltage pulse, and the high voltage is applied to the
magnetron. In this way, pulse-modulated microwaves are obtained.
The pulse width of the radar wave and the pulse-repetition frequency are specified by
means of control commands from the display unit.
The radar wave passes through a duplexer circuit that uses a circulator and then through
a rotary joint, before being transmitted into the air from the antenna.
A signal reflected from a target is input from the antenna to the receiving block using
the duplexer function. The received signal is amplified before being converted to the IF
frequency, after which logarithmic detection is performed and the signal becomes a
radar video signal. If the receiving tuning function is set to the auto mode, the interface
circuit processes the received signal and automatically controls the tuning voltage so as
to match the optimum local frequency.
When the interface circuit turns on the scanner unit relay, AC power is supplied to
the motor driver circuit and the antenna motor rotates. If the safety switch is off,
2-7
SERVICE MANUAL Section > 2.System Configulation
the power supplied to the motor driver is forcibly shut off, stopping the rotation of the
antenna motor. The beam azimuth of the antenna is detected by the encoder.
The received radar video signal, the transmission timing signal, and the antenna rotation
signal are all sent to the display unit. The radar video signal is an unprocessed
log-compressed signal. The antenna rotation signal is an incremental signal which uses
the 2048 pulse/rotation pulse and the azimuth reference pulse.
When a set period of time has elapsed after the communication signal from the display
unit has stopped, the interface circuit switches to the protection mode and forcibly stops
transmission and the rotation of the antenna.
When the radiator is subjected to external force of wind (corresponding wind speed is
greater than 51.5m/s) that exceed the ability to drive the scanner unit, the scanner unit
stop to drive the motor. Because a built-in overload protection circuit is activated. If the
scanner unit rotates by the wind in a counterclockwise direction, the TXRX[Reverse]
alarm will be appeared, and stop to transmit. If the scanner unit rotates by the wind in a
clockwise direction, the scanner unit stop to drive the motor. Therefore the TXRX[AZI]
alarm will be appeared when the wind is calm down.
When the corresponding wind speed is less than or equal to 51.5m/s, the break circuit
(in the scanner unit) can reduce the scanner rotation speed to 11rpm less than, therefore
the radar can transmit normally.

The functional system diagram of the system's display unit is shown in Fig 2-3.
After the power is turned on, the local CPU in the radar processing circuit CDC- 1324,
the graphic CPU, the CPU in the AIS processing circuit and the operation CPU in the
operation circuit CCK-976 are released from their reset status, perform the initialization
of the respective hardware items to which they are connected, and wait for control
commands from the main CPU.
The main CPU is released from the reset status and initializes the radar image/ display
function before initializing the entire system. First, it send initial settings commands to
the local CPU to initialize the radar signal settings, and it sends a communication
initialization command to the operating unit CPU to initialize the operation functions.
The main CPU also writes a program to the memory in the DSP of the ARPA
processing circuit to start the DSP and issue an initialization command to the CPU in
the AIS processing circuit to initialize the AIS processing circuit.
After that, the main CPU sets the internal status according to the sensor data input from
the various communication lines, such as the GYRO I/F and GPS, and issues an
initialization command to the transmitter-receiver unit via the communication line to
initialize the transmitter-receiver unit. This concludes the initialization of the system.
B. Circuit Functions
The GYRO I/F circuit CMJ-462E processes the gyro signal, which is in the synchro or
step format, calculates the true azimuth, and sends the true azimuth data to the radar
processing circuit at regular intervals using serial communication. As long as the GYRO
I/F circuit is receiving the gyro signal, it is supplied with power and the CPU operates
even if the display unit power is turned off. Therefore, even if the display unit power is
turned off, the GYRO I/F circuit can continue to calculate the true azimuth.
The operating circuit CPU detects the operating status of the switches and dials of the
2-10
SERVICE MANUAL Section > 2.System Configulation
operation panel and sends the operation data to the main CPU through the
communication line.
The radar signal processing circuit in the radar processing circuit digitalizes the radar
signals it receives from the transmitter-receiver unit (the radar video signal, the
transmission timing signal, and the antenna rotation signal), suppresses unwanted waves,
and draws and displays a radar image in accordance with the display screen.
The ARPA processing signal receives the radar signal data, with the unwanted waves
suppressed by the radar signal processing circuit, and performs target tracking. The
results of the tracking are sent to the main CPU in the radar processing circuit.
The AIS processing circuit processes the AIS communication data input from an
external device, manages the database of all the AIS targets received, and send the
information on important targets to the main CPU. Based on this information, the main
CPU displays the AIS targets and necessary information on the radar screen.
The terminal block circuit board contains a built-in interface circuit for the external
equipment, performs level conversion for the various signals, and connects directly to
the radar processing circuit.
The motherboard relays signals between the various processing circuits and the terminal
block circuit board.
The display shows on an LCD panel the display signals output from the radar
processing circuit. The brightness of the display can be adjusted using the knob on the
display.
The radar signals sent by the transmitter-receiver unit are input to the radar processing
2-11
SERVICE MANUAL Section > 2.System Configulation
circuit via the terminal block circuit board and the motherboard.
Unwanted waves are suppressed and a radar image suited to the display screen is
drawn/displayed.
The switches and dials on the operation unit can be used to change the settings of the
signal processing in the radar processing circuit and the screen display, the results of
which are immediately reflected in the radar image display.
The main CPU of the radar processing circuit automatically detects, when the system is
started, whether or not there is an inter switch. If there is, it operates in the inter switch
mode. If there is no inter switch, or if the inter switch or its cable is damaged,
preventing the inter switch from being detected, the main CPU automatically operates in
the standalone mode.

Replacement Procedure
Before starting part replacement, make sure all power supplies for all radars (when you
are using more than one radar) are turned off. Shut off the circuit breaker for the main
power supply.
Wear gloves to avoid injury when replacing parts. Be careful to ensure safety when
working at a height, including measures to ensure that no tools or parts are dropped.
Perform the part replacement work where the ship is stable, such as in a harbor.
Be careful that the radiator, which may rotate in the wind, does not hit a maintenance
engineer.
Do not replace any parts when the radiator is rotating by the wind or by the hands.
There
is a danger risk of getting an electric shock. Because the motor generates high voltage
when the radiator is rotating, even if the power is turned off.

7.3.2.2 Cannot display true bearing
[1] Content
In such cases, there is always some error that appears, such as:GYRO I/F
(DATA), GYRO I/F (GYRO), or Heading (DATA).
It is possible that settings have not been made correctly or that there is a
problem on the azimuth sensor side.
The diagram above shows the routes of signals output using IEC61162-1/2. If
the azimuth sensor shows CMPS, the output signal from the external equipment
is input directly to the radar process circuit. If it shows "GYRO", the output
signal is input to the radar process circuit in JRC format via the GYRO I/F
circuit. If the connection settings are correct, the azimuth is correctly displayed
whichever mode is switched to.
If the azimuth is not displayed by switching between CMPS and GYRO, the
settings are not correct. For the GYRO I/F circuit it is necessary to set the
DIPSW and jumper. If CMPS is selected, check the baud rates shown below.
If GYRO is selected, a baud rate of 4,800 bps, 9,600 bps, 19,200 bps, or 38,400
bps can be selected.
If CMPS is selected, a baud rate of 4,800 bps or 38,400 bps can be selected.
If the IEC61162-1/2 signal is received via the GYRO I/F circuit, an error
results ,the data updating rate is too slow. Data must be updated within 50 ms.
If CMPS is selected, even , the data updating is slow it does not cause an error,
but it is possible that the target being tracked may be lost. As a rule, it is
necessary to update data within 50 ms.
7-44
[2]-2 GYRO(DATA) STEP
• In the step type of gyro, where the signal amplitude is small, errors can occur.
Errors are often seen when multiple devices are connected to a single port, and
the output capacity of the gyro-compass is exceeded.
• When this happens, the potential of the LOW level of the output signal may
occasionally rise. The input spec, ications for the GYRO I/F circuit require the
LOW level of +/-2.5 V or less. The HIGH level must be +/-20 V or more.
In the BR-3200, the GYRO I/F circuit operates using the internal power
supply of the display unit even when the display
unit is turned off. This has reduced the output conditions on the
gyro-compass side. From the perspective of the gyro-compass, the input
resistance of the GYRO I/F circuit is maintained at a high level.
(Reference: 22kΩ @24 Vdc, when the display unit is turned off.)
