The electric field in the cavity of a hollow conductor is zero, whatever be the size and
shape of the conductor. On the surface and in the cavity of the hollow conductor, electric
potential remains constant. Hence the potential difference between any two points and work
done in moving a test charge, inside and on its surface, are zero. If the conductor is charged
or charges are induced on it, by an external field, all charges reside only on the outer
surface of the conductor. This phenomenon is called electrostatic shielding.
