16. If secθ + tanθ = p, find the value of secθ in terms of p. 3
Sol : secθ + tanθ = p
secθ – tanθ =1/p
2 secθ = p + 1/p secθ = (p2 + 1)/2p

17. If sinθ+ sin2θ = 1, prove that cos2θ+ cos4θ = 1 3

Sol : sinθ+ sin2θ = 1, ➔ sinθ = 1 – sin2θ, ➔ sinθ = cos2θ
Squaring both side we get, sin2θ = cos4θ
➔1 – cos2θ = cos4θ
➔1 = cos4θ + cos2θ

18. In triangle PQR, right-angled at Q, PR + QR = 25 cm and PQ = 5 cm. Determine the values of
sin P, cos P and tan P. 4
Sol: Given, In triangle PQR, PQ = 5 cm and PR + QR = 25 cm
Let us say, QR = x, Then, PR = 25 – QR = 25 – x
Using Pythagoras theorem: PR2 = PQ2 + QR2
➔ (25 – x)2 = (5)2 + (x)2 ➔ 252 + x2 – 50x = 25 + x2

➔ 625 – 50x = 25, ➔ 50x = 600, ➔x = 12

So, QR = 12 cm, ➔ PR = 25 – QR = 25 – 12 = 13 cm
Therefore, sin P = QR/PR = 12/13, cos P = PQ/PR = 5/13 and tan P = QR/PQ = 12/5

1 + sinA
19. Prove that √ = sec A + tan A 4
1 – sinA
√(1+sinA) (1−sinA)×(1+sinA)(1+sinA)
=√(1+sinA)2/1−sin2A
=√(1+sinA)2 /cos2A
=1+sinA/cosA
=1/cosA+sinA/cosA
=secA+tanA

20. Prove that (sin A – 2 sin3A)/(2 cos3A – cos A) = tan A. 4

Sol: LHS = (sin A – 2 sin3A)/(2 cos3A – cos A)
= [sin A(1 – 2 sin2A)]/ [cos A(2 cos2A – 1]
Using the identity sin2θ + cos2θ = 1,
= [sin A(sin2A + cos2A – 2 sin2A)]/ [cos A(2 cos2A – sin2A – cos2A]
= [sin A(cos2A – sin2A)]/ [cos A(cos2A – sin2A)]
= sin A/cos A
= tan A = RHS

21. If tanθ + cotθ = 5, then find the value of tan2θ + cot2θ. 2

Sol: tan θ + cot θ = 5, squaring both side we get
tan2θ + cot2θ + 2tanθcotθ = 25 , ➔ tan2θ + cot2θ + 2 = 25
➔ tan2θ + cot2θ = 23

22. From the top of a 7 m high building, the angle of elevation of the top of a cable tower is
60° and the angle of depression of its foot is 45°. Determine the height of the tower. 5
Sol: Let AB be the height of the building and CE be the height of the tower.
Also, A be the point from where the elevation of the tower is 60° and the angle of depression
of its foot is 45°. EC = DE + CD

From the figure, CD = AB = 7m and BC = AD

In right ΔABC, tan 45° = AB/BC ➔1 = 7/BC
BC = 7 {since BC = AD} ➔ Thus, AD = 7 m
In right triangle ADE, tan 60° = DE/AD
√3 = DE/7
⇒ DE = 7√3 m
EC = DE + CD = (7√3 + 7) = 7(√3 + 1)
Therefore, the height of the tower is 7(√3 + 1) m.

23. The angle of elevation of the top of a tower from a point on the ground, which is 30 m
away from the foot of the tower, is 30°. Find the height of the tower. 5
Sol:
Let AB be the height of the tower and C is the point elevation which is 30 m away from the
foot of the tower.

To Find: AB (height of the tower)

In right ABC, tan 30° = AB/BC
1/√3 = AB/30
⇒ AB = 10√3
Thus, the height of the tower is 10√3 m.

24. The angle of elevation of the top of a building from the foot of the tower is 30° and the
angle of elevation of the top of the tower from the foot of the building is 60°. If the tower is
50 m high, find the height of the building. 5
Sol: Let CD be the height of the tower. AB be the height of the building. BC be the distance
between the foot of the building and the tower. Elevation is 30 degree and 60 0 from the tower
and the building respectively.

In right ΔBCD,
tan 60° = CD/BC
√3 = 50/BC
BC = 50/√3 ……………..…(1)
Again,
In right ΔABC,
tan 30° = AB/BC
⇒ 1/√3 = AB/BC
Use result obtained in equation (1)
AB = 50/3
Thus, the height of the building is 50/3 m.

25. The angles of elevation of the top of a tower from two points at a distance of 4 m and 9
m from the base of the tower and in the same straight line with it are complementary. Prove
that the height of the tower is 6 m. 5
Sol: Let AB be the tower. C and D be the two points with distance 4 m and 9 m from the
base respectively. As per question,

In right ΔABC, tan x = AB/BC ➔ tan x = AB/4, ➔AB = 4 tan x ……………….… (i)
Again, from right ΔABD, tan (90°- x) = AB/BD, ➔ cot x = AB/9
AB = 9 cot x ………………………………. (ii)
Multiplying equation (i) and (ii)
AB2 = 9 cot x × 4 tan x
⇒ AB2 = 36 (because cot x = 1/tan x)
⇒ AB = ± 6
Since height cannot be negative, therefore, the height of the tower is 6 m.
