What is an Infinitive?

• An infinitive is a verb form that acts like another part of speech (noun, adjective, or adverb).
• It always begins with the word "to" followed by the base verb (e.g., to sing, to dance, to
learn).
Speaker Notes
An infinitive is a special kind of verb. It can transcend its verb nature and take on the role of a noun,
adjective, or adverb, providing more flexibility and nuance to our sentences. Remember, the "to" is
key, and it's followed by the unconjugated verb form (not "sing" but "sing").

Building an Infinitive Phrase

• An infinitive phrase is an infinitive verb PLUS modifiers (adverbs), objects (nouns,
pronouns), complements, or actors.
• These additional elements provide more detail or context to the infinitive verb.
Speaker Notes
Think of an infinitive phrase as an expansion of the infinitive. The infinitive acts like the main
character, and the modifiers, objects, and complements play supporting roles, enriching the meaning
of the phrase. For instance, an infinitive phrase can include adverbs describing how something is done
(beautifully), objects receiving the action (the piano), or even complements explaining what the action
achieves (becoming a doctor).

Infinitive Phrases as Nouns

Infinitive Phrases as Nouns
• Infinitive phrases can function as nouns.
• They can be the subject, direct object, indirect object, predicate nominative, or appositive in a
sentence.
Speaker Notes
Just like a noun, an infinitive phrase can take center stage or play various supporting roles in a
sentence. They can be the reason something happens (subject), the thing being received (direct
object), or even explain or rename something (appositive).
Example
My goal (infinitive phrase as subject) is to graduate with honors.
Speaker Notes
In this example, the infinitive phrase "to graduate with honors" functions as the subject of the
sentence.
Infinitive Phrases as Adjectives
• Infinitive phrases can act as adjectives.
• They modify nouns or pronouns, describing them further.
Speaker Notes
Imagine an infinitive phrase as a descriptive tag attached to a noun or pronoun. It provides additional
information about what the noun or pronoun can do or what might happen to it.
Example
I found a book (noun) to read on vacation (infinitive phrase as adjective).
Speaker Notes
Here, the infinitive phrase "to read on vacation" modifies the noun "book," describing it as something
that can be read while on vacation.

Infinitive Phrases as Adverbs

• Infinitive phrases can function as adverbs.
• They modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, telling us how, when, why, or where
something happens.
Speaker Notes
An infinitive phrase as an adverb is like an informative caption for a verb, adjective, or another
adverb. It provides details about the manner, time, reason, or location of an action or state of being.
Example : I woke up early to catch the sunrise.
