Assignment 1 - CSE
Instructions:
• ANSWER NEATLY AND LEGIBLY in ASSIGNMENT BOOKS.
• Sketch diagrams wherever relevant. Explain your notations explicitly and clearly.
• Fill in the details on the front page.
1 State and explain Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle. Give its physical CO1 L2
significance. Using Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, show that a free electron
cannot exist within the nucleus of an atom.
2 Derive the time independent Schrodinger wave equation for a particle in one CO1 L2
dimension.
3 Using Schrodinger’s time independent wave equation obtain eigen values and eigen CO3 L2
function for a particle in one dimensional potential well of infinite height. Discuss
the nature of Eigen functions and Eigen energy values.
4 Derive an expression for energy density of incident radiation in terms of Einstein’s CO1 L2
coefficients.
5 Discuss the construction and working of a semiconductor laser. CO1 L2
6 Derive an expression for numerical aperture and acceptance angle for an optical fiber CO1 L2
and arrive at condition for propagation of light.
7 Discuss the various types of optical fibers with suitable figures. CO3 L2
.
ASSIGNMENT FOR GROUP II (FOR STUDENTS SCORED 21 TO 40/50 IN IAT-1)
1 Find the probability of locating an electron in a potential well of width 1A 0 in the interval CO3 L3
0 to 0.25A0.
2 The attenuation in an optical-fiber is 3.6dB/km. What fractional of its initial intensity CO1 L3
3 The natural uncertainty in the measurement of speed of an electron in an atom is estimated CO1 L3
to be 2.2 x 104 m/s conceding ideal set-up and error-free measurement. Estimate the
minimum width about which the electron stays confined in the atom.
4 A ruby laser emits pulses of 20 ns duration with average power/pulse being 0.1mw. If the CO1 L3
number of photons in each pulse is 6.981 X 1015, calculate the wavelength of the photons.
ASSIGNMENT FOR GROUP III (FOR STUDENTS SCORED > 40/50 IN IAT-1)
1 Elaborate on how Photoelectric effect, Compton Effect, Raman Effect confirm CO1 L3
photon theory.
2 Find the total Energy radiated from Sun assuming it to be Black body at 6000K. CO1 L3
3 Discuss the how quantum computers utilize laws of quantum mechanics. CO3 L3
4 A spectral line of wavelength 4900Å has a width of 10-4Å. Evaluate the minimum CO1 L3
time spent by the electron in the upper energy state between the excitation and de-
excitation processes.
