COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The objectives of the course are: -
To make the students understand what environment and ecosystem are.
To illustrate the intrinsic role of microorganisms in a clean environment.
To emphasize the active role of microorganisms in relation to biotechnology.
COURSE CONTENTS:
Introduction to Environmental Biotechnology
o Microorganisms in the environment
o Microbial physiology
Role of microorganisms in an ecosystem
Environmental pollutants and their microbial transformation
o Organic pollutants
o Inorganic pollutants
Biological Wastewater Treatment:
o Elimination of organic carbon
o Nitrification
o Denitrification
o Membrane bioreactors
o Wastewater Reuse
Biological Sewage Sludge Treatment:
o Aerobic/anaerobic stabilization
o methane formation
o sludge disintegration
o sludge utilization
Bioremediation:
o Fundamentals
o Methods and strategies of application (bio stimulation,
bioaugmentation)
o Technological aspects of bioremediation (in situ, ex situ)
o Application of microbes in bioremediation
Phytoremediation:
o Fundamentals and description of major methods of application;
phytoaccumulation, phytovolatilization, rhizofiltration phytostabilization.
Role of Environmental Biotechnology in Agriculture:
o Bioinsecticides (Bacillus thuringienis, Baciloviruses), genetic modifications
and aspects of safety in their use.
o Biofungicides (e.g. Trichoderma, Pseudomonas fluorescens) - mode of actions
and mechanisms.
o Biofertilizers: Symbiotic systems between plants – microorganisms, Plant
growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) – uses, practical aspects and problems
in application.
