Honorary Speech for National Artist of the Philippines in Literature

Magandang araw po sa inyong lahat! Today, as I stand before you, I am overwhelmed

with gratitude and pride as I accept this esteemed honor as a National Artist of the
Philippines in Literature. This recognition is not just a personal achievement; it is a
celebration of the rich tapestry of our Filipino heritage. Writing stories that resonate with
our culture is a profound privilege, allowing me to explore and share the vibrant legends
and myths that shape our identity from the enchanting tale of the Bakunawa to the myriad
of local fables that have been passed down through generations. Each word I write is a
love letter to our history, our struggles, and our dreams, and I am deeply thankful for the
opportunity to bring these narratives to life. Salamat po sa lahat ng nagtiwala sa akin at sa
mga kwentong aking isinulat, and for allowing me to share my passion with the world.

Reflecting on my journey, I am reminded of the countless evenings spent at my

grandfather’s side, where the magic of storytelling first ignited my imagination. His deep,
resonant voice would weave intricate tales that spanned generations, from the brave
warriors of our past to the mystical creatures that inhabit our folklore. I can still picture
the way his eyes sparkled as he shared the stories of superstitioun or the cautionary
lessons hidden within the stories of the kapre and the diwata. Those moments were more
than just stories; they were lessons in resilience, wisdom, and the interconnectedness of
our culture. Through his narratives, I learned that our history is alive, and it is our duty to
keep it vibrant and relevant. Those cherished evenings not only instilled a sense of
identity within me but also forged an unbreakable bond between generations, a legacy of
storytelling that I strive to honor in my own work.

As I conclude, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported me

throughout this incredible journey. To my readers, your enthusiasm for my stories has
been my guiding light, inspiring me to dig deeper and reach higher. To my family and
friends, your unwavering belief in my voice has given me the strength to pursue my
passion, even in the face of challenges. And to my beloved grandfather, your wisdom and
storytelling have shaped not only my love for literature but also my understanding of
what it means to be Filipino. This award is not just mine; it belongs to all of you who
have walked beside me, encouraged me, and shared in the magic of our stories. Muli,
maraming salamat po sa inyong lahat! Let us continue to celebrate our heritage and the
stories that connect us all.
