Concept of Piping Support
Concept of Piping Support
1. Line List
2. Isometric Drawing
3. Piping Plan Drawing
4. 3D Modeling (PDMS or Navis)
5. Support Standard of Project
Type of Supports:
1. Weight Support
2. Rigid Support
3. Structural Support
4. Dynamic Support
1. Weight Support
1. Shoe
2. Trunion
3. Dummy Leg
4. Tie Rod Hanger
5. Spring Support
6. Sleeper
1. Weight Support- Shoe
Shoe support is applicable for:
1-Insulation, 2- Inclined piping, 3- GRP, SS, Galvanized, 4-Large pipe diameter
1. Weight Support- Shoe-Friction Coefficient
•S.S
•S.S (Pipe)+C.S (Pipe)
•S.S (Pad) +C.S (Pipe)
•S.S (Clamp) +C.S (Pipe)
If pipe is GRP Then clamped trunion is C.S
1. Weight Support- Dummy Leg
Its similar to trunion, but its installed in horizontal direction.
1. Weight Support- Rod Hanger
It is used for location that we want to stand the weight and also vertical displacement is allowed.
1. Weight Support- Spring Support
Variable against Constant
1. Weight Support- Sleeper
1. Guide
2. Hold Down
3. Line Stop
4. Semi-Anchor
5. Full Anchor
2. Rigid Support-Guide
• Guide Supports limit the transverse movement of piping due to wind and
earth quick
• Prevent buckling of piping due to thermal movement
• These supports usually are used in points that weight support is located
2. Rigid Support-Guide
2. Rigid Support-Hold Down
Important Note!
Double stop in a straight run is prohibited.
2. Rigid Support-Semi Anchor Support
• Limits the axial and transverse movement and stand weight of piping in same time
2. Rigid Support-Full Anchor Support
• This support is not recommended due to high rigidity.
2. Rigid Support- Brief View
3. Structural Support
• If there is not piperack or sleeper in piping area, structural support shall be designed.
Cantiliver L structure
Process Piping=4~5 mm
Utility Piping= up to 12 mm
Allowable Pipe Deflection for GRP in AWWA M45 has been considered 0.5 in
4. Supporting Principles-Weight Horizontal Support
• Independent to length of vertical line just one weight support shall be used in vertical
lines. More weight supports lead to lift off event.
!Load support shall be close to nozzle in order to decrease
different expansion of pipe and equipment
4. Supporting Principles-Rigid Support
