PRE MOCK PRACTICE PAPER-3

ISC 12

Maximum Marks: 70
Time Allowed: Three Hours
(Candidates are allowed additional 15 minutes for only reading the paper.
They must NOT start writing during this time.)
This paper is divided into four sections – A, B, C and D.
Answer all questions.
Section A consists of one question having sub-parts of one mark each.
Section B consists of seven questions of two marks each.
Section C consists of nine questions of three marks each, and
Section D consists of three questions of five marks each.
Internal choices have been provided in two questions each in Section B,
Section C and Section D.
The intended marks for questions are given in brackets [ ].
All working, including rough work, should be done on the same sheet as and adjacent to the rest
of the answer.
Answers to sub parts of the same question must be given in one place only. A list of useful
physical constants is given at the end of this paper.
A simple scientific calculator without a programmable memory may be used for calculations.

(i) Write the two properties of equipotential surface.


(ii) What is the order of the binding energy of a nucleus?
(iii) What effects occur on the conductivity of a semiconductor when its temperature is

(iv) Magnetic flux of 10 µWb is linked with a coil, when a current of 2 mA flows through it.
Find self-inductance of the coil.
(v) How can the real image of an object be obtained with a convex mirror?
(vi) Explain how the intensity of diffraction pattern changes as the order (n) of the diffraction
band varies?
(vii) An AC generator generates an emf E given by E = 311sin (100πt) V Find the rms value of
the emf generated by the generator.

SECTION B – 14 MARKS

Question 2 [2]

Two identical circular loops P and Q, each of radius r and carrying equal currents are kept in the
parallel planes having a common axis passing through 0. The direction of current in P is clockwise and
in Q is anti-clockwise as seen from O, which is equidistant from the loops P and Q. Find the magnitude
of the net magnetic field at O.

(ii) (Show with the help of a labelled graph how their wavelength (λ) varies with their linear
momentum (p).

Question 6 [2]

In a Young's double slit experiment, the slits are separated by 0.28 mm and the screen is placed 1.4 m
away. The distance between the central bright fringe and fourth bright fringe is measured to be 1.2 cm.
Determine the wavelength of light used in the experiment.

OR

The intensity at the central maxima (O) in a Young's double slit experiment is I o. If the distance OP
equals two-third of fringe width of the pattern, show that the intensity at point P would be Io/4.

Question 7 [2]

A parallel beam of light of 500 nm falls on a narrow slit and the resulting diffraction pattern is
observed on a screen 1 m away. It is observed that the first minima are at a distance of 2.5 mm from
the centre of the screen. Calculate the width of the slit.

How can elements be identified by the study of the line spectrum?

OR

What is the ratio of radii of the orbits corresponding to second excited state and ground state in a H-
atom?
SECTION C – 27 MARKS

Question 9 [3]
When two materials are placed in an external magnetic field, the behaviour of magnetic field lines is as
shown in the figure. Identify the magnetic nature of each of these two materials.

Question 10 [3]

Find the ratio of the potential differences that must be applied across the parallel and series
combination of two capacitors C1 and C2 with their capacitances in the ratio 1:2, so that the energy
stored in these two cases becomes the same.

OR

Two identical parallel plate capacitors A and B are connected to a battery of V volts with the switch S
is closed. The switch is now opened and the free space between the plates of the capacitors is filled
with a dielectric of dielectric constant K. Find the ratio of the total electrostatic energy stored in both
capacitors before and after the introduction of the dielectric.

Question 11 [3]

In a nuclear reactor, U²³⁵ undergoes fission releasing energy of 100 MeV. The reactor has 20%
efficiency and the power produced is 2000 MW. If the reactor is to function for 5 yr, find the total
mass of uranium required.

(i) In photoelectric effect, what is meant by the terms


(a) work function and
(b) stopping potential?
Also specify, how stopping potential is related to kinetic energy of photoelectrons?
(ii) Write the Einstein's photoelectric equation?

Question 13 [3]
The distance between the first and the sixth bright fringes formed in Young's double slit experiment
(measured by a spectrometer) is found to be 12.5 mm. The separation between the slits is 0.12 mm and
the distance of the screen from the slits is 60 cm. Calculate
(i) the fringe width and
(ii) wavelength of the light used (in nm).

OR

With the help of suitable ray diagram, derive a relation between the object distance u, image distance v
and radius of curvature R for a convex spherical surface, when a ray of light travels from rarer to
denser medium.

(i) In which condition, force on a moving charged particle is zero in uniform magnetic field.
(ii) An α-particle and a proton are moving in the plane of paper in a region of uniform magnetic
field B normal to the plane of paper. If the particles have equal linear momentum, what will
be the ratio of radii of their trajectories?

Question 15 [3]

A cube with each side a is kept in an electric field, given by E = Cx î as shown in the figure, where C is
a positive dimensionless constant.

Find out
(i) the electric flux through the cube and
(ii) the net charge inside the cube.

Question 16 [3]

(i) Draw the diagram of voltage-current characteristics of p-n junction diode under forward
and reverse bias.
(ii) Give example of a diode used in
(a) forward bias. (b) reverse bias.
Question 17 [3]

A mixed experiment of an LED, a transistor, an IC, a resistor and a capacitor from a collection of such
items, are performed by a student. The examiner gives the following instructions to the student. State
whether the responses of the student in each case, are correct or incorrect. Give a reason for your
answer.
(i) EXAMINER Resistor and capacitor are two terminal devices. Identify the resistor and
capacitor out of a mixture of the above mentioned components.
(i) STUDENT identified the resistor and capacitor respectively, when connected in a DC
circuit, it shows a constant current, and full scale (current) which decays to zero very
quickly.
(ii) EXAMINER Diode is two terminal devices. Identify the diode out of a mixture of the
above mentioned components.
(iii) STUDENT use a multimeter, if no current flows on reversing the polarity.
(iv) EXAMINER A transistor and an IC (integrated circuit) has three terminals and eight legs
respectively. Segregate the transistor and IC out of a mixture.
(v) STUDENT identified, most of the IC packages have flat back. A transistor can be
identified just by looking at the various components.

SECTION D – 15 MARKS

Question 18 [5]

(i) Draw a ray diagram to show refraction of a ray of monochromatic light passing through a
glass prism. Deduce the expression for the refractive index of glass in terms of angle of
prism and angle of minimum deviation.
(ii) Explain briefly how the phenomenon of total internal reflection is used in fiber optics.

OR

(i) Draw a labelled ray diagram showing the formation of a final image by a compound
microscope at least distance of distinct vision.
(ii) The total magnification produced by a compound microscope is 20. The magnification
produced by the eyepiece is 5. The microscope is focused on a certain object. The distance
between the object and eyepiece is observed to be 14 cm. If least distance of distinct vision
is 20 cm, calculate the focal length of the object and the eyepiece.

Question 19 [5]

(i) AB and CD are two parallel conductors kept Im apart and connected by a resistance R of
62, as shown in figure below. They are placed in a magnetic field B = 3 × 10-2 T which is
perpendicular to the plane of the conductors and directed into the paper. A wire MN is
placed over AB and CD and then made to slide with a velocity 2 m/s (Neglect the resistance
of AB, CD and MN.)

Calculate the induced current flowing through the resistor R.


(ii) State two laws which give the direction of induced current.

OR

(i) What is a transformer? State the principle on which it works. Explain briefly its
construction and working.
(ii) In an ideal transformer, an output of 66 kv is required when an input voltage of 220 V is
available. If the primary has 300 turns, how many turns should secondary have?

Question 20 [5]

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow.

An electric cell is a source of energy that maintains a continuous flow of charge in a circuit. It changes
chemical energy into electrical energy. It has two electrodes, positive electrode and negative electrode
as shown alongside.

Electric cell has to do some work in maintaining the current through a circuit. The work done by the
cell in moving unit positive charge through the whole circuit (including the cell) is called the
electromotive force (ɛ) of the cell. It also has some internal resistance(r).
(i) (a) Find the expression for the current flowing through the cell.
(b) State the condition in which cell can transfer maximum power to the load.
(ii) Find the potential difference between P and N of the cell for infinite value of R.
(iii) For the given circuit, suppose the cell has an emf of 2V and the internal resistance of this
cell is 0.1Ω. If it is connected to a resistance of 3.9Ω, then find the
(a) current drawn from the cell
(b) potential difference across the resistor
