Section I (40 marks)

The fountain starts when a few drops of water from the dropper are introduced into
the flask. Instead of the drops of water, Raj started the fountain by introducing a few
drops of dil. HCl into the flask.

(a) Explain why the litmus solution gets sucked up when Sodium hydroxide is
used.

(b) What will be the colour of the fountain when Sodium hydroxide is used?
Justify your answer.

(c) If instead of HCl gas, ammonia gas is filled in the flask and water is introduced
from the dropper, will there be a different observation? Justify your answer.

(e) Solve the following numericals: [5]


a) Ethane burns in oxygen according to the chemical equation:
2 C2H6 + 7O2 → 4 CO2 + 6H2O
If 80 mL of ethane is burnt in 300 mL of oxygen, find the composition of
the resultant gaseous mixture at room temperature.

b) Washing soda has the formula Na2CO3.10H2O.What mass of anhydrous sodium carbonate is left
when all the water of crystallization is expelled by heating 57.2 g of washing soda.

i. Find the empirical and molecular formula of an organic compound from the data given below:

(a) Answer the questions based on the diagram given below which shows the electro-refining of copper.

iii. State the importance of sulphuric acid used in the process.

(a) During the electrolysis of copper (II)sulphate solution using platinum as cathode and carbon as anode:

i. Reaction of ammonium hydroxide solution with iron(II)sulphate solution.
ii. Reaction of calcium nitrate solution with sodium hydroxide solution.
iii. Reaction of zinc oxide with sodium hydroxide solution.

(c) Element X is a metal with a valency 2. Element Y is a non-metal with a valency 3. [2]

ii. If Y is a diatomic gas, write the equation for the direct combination of X and Y to form a

Question 7.
(a) Ammonia reacts with buff yellow oxide: [4]
i. Mention one observation during this reaction.
ii. Write the balanced chemical reaction for the above reaction.
iii. If the buff yellow substance is replaced by a black colour metal oxide which gas will be evolved.
iv. Identify the property exhibited by the ammonia in this reaction.
(b) 20 ml of hydrogen , 10 ml of carbon monoxide and 20 ml of oxygen are exploded in a eudiometer. What
will be the volume and composition of the mixture of gases, after cooling to room temperature? Write each
reaction separately. [3]
(c) The diagram given below represents the electrolysis of acidified water [3]

i. Why is the electrolysis of acidified water referred to as catalysis?
ii. Dil. sulphuric acid is preferred over dil. nitric acid for this process. Give reason
iii. Write the balanced chemical equation taking place at anode and cathode.

I. Sodium hydroxide solution is added first in small amount and then in excess in Zinc sulphate solution.
The preparation of lead sulphate from lead carbonate is a two-step process. (Lead sulphate cannot be prepared by
adding dilute sulphuric acid to lead carbonate)
II. What is the first step that is required to prepare lead sulphate from lead carbonate?
III. Write the chemical equation for the reaction that will take place when this first step is carried out.
IV. Why is the direct addition of dilute sulphuric acid to lead carbonate an impractical method of preparing lead
sulphate?
