1. What is your thesis proposal all about?

My thesis examines the effect of social media sustainability on the performance and
survival of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Cotabato City. It seeks to
analyze how social media contributes to financial and non-financial performance,
business survival, and overall sustainability, incorporating aspects such as innovation,
adaptability, and risk management.

2. What prompted you to propose this study?

The growing role of social media as a tool for business sustainability inspired this study.
SMEs, which constitute a significant part of the global economy, face numerous
challenges in adapting to social, economic, and environmental demands. Recognizing
the potential of social media to address these challenges and improve SMEs'
performance motivated me to investigate its impact specifically within Cotabato City.

3. What is your statement of the problem?

The study aims to address the following problems:

• Assess the level of business performance in terms of financial and non-financial

aspects.
• Determine the level of business survival concerning innovation and adaptability.
• Examine the significant relationship between business performance,
sustainability, and survival.
• Identify which factors—business performance or survival—best influence SMEs'
sustainability.

4. What legal bases do you have?

The study is grounded in relevant legislation and frameworks supporting SME

development and sustainability. For instance:

• The Philippine SME Development Plan advocates digital transformation for

competitiveness.
• The World Commission on Environment and Development Report (1987)
emphasizes sustainable development principles integrating economic, social,
and environmental aspects.
• The Bayanihan to Heal as One Act (RA 11469) indirectly supports digital tools like
social media during crises.
5. What are the variables in your study?

Cause (Independent Variables)

1. SMEs Business Performance:

o Includes profitability, revenue growth, and market share, which reflect the
financial and market success of small and medium-sized enterprises.

2. SMEs Business Survival:

o Includes adaptability, risk management, and financial resilience, which

represent the ability of SMEs to continue operating despite challenges.

Effect (Dependent Variable)

• Sustainability:

o Refers to the long-term viability of SMEs, including their financial stability,

adoption of environmental practices, and contribution to social
responsibility.

Relationship

• SMEs Business Performance and SMEs Business Survival are hypothesized to

directly influence (cause) the sustainability of SMEs (effect).

o For example:

▪ Higher profitability and better market performance (cause) may

enable businesses to invest in sustainable practices (effect).

▪ Strong adaptability and financial resilience (cause) ensure the

survival of SMEs, which supports their long-term sustainability
(effect).

6. What research method will you use?

I will employ a quantitative research design using a descriptive survey method. This
approach enables the measurement of relationships between social media
sustainability and SME performance and survival.

7. Who will be the respondents?

The respondents will include managers or owners of SMEs in Cotabato City, selected
across different industries. A total of 30 SMEs will participate, representing a diverse
sample from the region.

8. What sampling method will you use?

A random sampling method will be employed to ensure a representative distribution of
SMEs from various industries in Cotabato City.

9. How will you gather data?

Data will be gathered through survey questionnaires, distributed digitally via platforms
like Google Forms. The questionnaire will include items adapted from validated studies
on the impact of social media sustainability. Follow-ups and reminders will ensure
sufficient response rates.

10. Do you think your proposed study is timely and useful?

Yes, the study is both timely and useful. With the increasing reliance on digital tools,
especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, understanding how social media
impacts SMEs is critical. The findings will provide actionable insights for business
owners, policymakers, and future researchers to enhance the sustainability and
competitiveness of SMEs in a rapidly evolving market environment.
