PARETO
A Pareto Chart is a bar graph that
helps prioritize problems or causes
by identifying the most significant
contributors to a specific issue. It is
based on the 80/20 rule, which
states that approximately 80% of
problems are caused by 20% of the
factors. By focusing on these major
contributors, organizations can
achieve substantial improvements.
APPLICATION
Imagine a manufacturing company producing automotive parts. Over the past month, the
company has identified a high number of defective parts. To address this, a Pareto Chart is
created to analyze the causes of defects. Data reveals that 80% of defects come from two
specific machines (Machine A and Machine B). By addressing these machines (through
maintenance or training operators), the company can significantly reduce defects without
spreading resources thinly across minor issues.

PRINCIPLE: Continuous improvement is at the core of TQM and emphasizes

problems to tackle first for maximum impact. By focusing on the
“vital few” contributors to problems, the organization can implement
targeted improvements, monitor results, and repeat the process to
ensure ongoing enhancement of quality.
FISHBONE
DIAGRAM
The Fishbone Diagram is a visual
tool that helps identify the root
causes of a problem by
systematically categorizing potential
factors. Causes are grouped into
categories such as Manpower,
Methods, Machines, Materials,
Measurement, and Environment. It
encourages structured
brainstorming and ensures no key
aspect is overlooked.
APPLICATION PRINCIPLE:
Consider a customer service department in a large retail EMPLOYEE

CONTROL
CHARTS
A Control Chart is a statistical tool used to monitor process stability over time. It plots
process data (e.g., measurements or outputs) against upper and lower control limits to
identify variations. If the process deviates beyond these limits, corrective actions are
taken to bring it back under control. Control Charts distinguish between common cause
variation (inherent to the process) and special cause variation (caused by specific issues).
APPLICATION
A food processing plant that packages cereal uses Control Charts to monitor the weight of
packaged boxes. Each day, random samples of boxes are weighed, and the data is plotted
on the Control Chart. The company notices occasional weights falling outside the
acceptable range, indicating “special cause variation.” Upon investigation, it is discovered
that a specific packaging machine is malfunctioning due to wear and tear. The machine is
repaired, ensuring all boxes meet the required weight standards.

PRINCIPLE: TQM relies on making decisions based on accurate, real-time data

FACT-BASED rather than assumptions or guesswork. Control Charts support this
principle by providing objective insights into process performance.
DECISION-
They allow managers to distinguish between normal variations and
MAKING abnormal conditions requiring immediate action. By focusing on
data rather than opinions, organizations can make informed
decisions to maintain quality and process efficiency.
