Concave Lens
Concave Lens
Procedure:
1. The given convex lens is mounted on a lens stand and placed in front of the light
source at a definite distance say ‘u’
2. The screen is placed behind the lens and its position is adjusted to get a clear
image.
3. The distance between the screen and the image is measured as ‘v’
4. The focal length of the lens is calculated as f1
5. The above procedure is repeated by placing both the lenses in contact.
6. The focal length of the combination is calculated as F
7. The focal length of the concave lens is calculated using the formula

Precautions:
1. Do not disturb the light source and convex lens while noting down the object or
image distance.
2. The convex lens should have smaller focal length than the concave lens.
Source of Error:
1. The formula is applicable for thin lenses and so there is an error in the
determination of the focal length
2. Principal axis of the lens may not be parallel to the lens and the screen
Result: The focal length of the given concave lens was found to be …………cm
