AIM
To find the focal length of a concave lens, using a convex lens.
APPARATUS
1. Optical bench
3. Concave lens (more focal length)
,. Convex lens (less focal length) with holder
Four uprights (two fixed uprights
in middle, two outer uprights with

lateral movement)
5. Two optical needles 6. Half-metre scale
(one thin, one thick) 4
7. Cardboard screen 8. Knitting needle
9. Spirit level.
THEORY
1. Acconcave lens always forms a virtual image. So, its focal length cannot be found directly. We use an indie |
method to find its focal length.
2. Let aconvex lens L; form real image, of an object, at J. Interpose a concave lens L, between Ly and such that
the real image of the object is now formed at I. For the concave lens L,I, acts as virtual object and Jp acts as rea
image of I

‘The focal length fof the concave lens can be calculated using the formulaRESULT
Focal length of the given concave lens
PRECAUTIONS
1. The power of the convex lens should be more than the power of the concave lens. So, the combination is con
2. When we look at the image formed by the combination, the field of view becomes narrow and the image g
magnified. So, parallax has to be removed carefully.
3. A faint real and inverted image of image needle / should not be confused with the bold and bright image form
by the lens combination.
& The uprights must be vertical.
\B. Parallax must be removed tip to tip.
SOURCES OF ERROR
A. Parallax removal may not be perfect.
2. The uprights may not be vertical.
<3. The uprights may be shaky.
“4. The principal axes of the lenses may not be parallel to the optical bench.
5. The convex lens may be thick.
