Business awareness Situation: W​ hile working in a


bar/restaurant I realised that, when
• Identifying efficiency orders were taken despite the
improvements to building being two stories high the

money the kitchen located on the second
floor to put orders through.

Task: T
​ o suggest to management
that there should be a system
where the staff and the kitchen
could communicate with each
other without it having to be
face-to-face and through notes
only.

Action: I​ researched popular


methods that restaurants use in
their order system and found a
system that could be installed into
the registers that would
automatically send the orders to
the kitchen. I then pitched this idea
to my manager who then told his
seniors about it.

Result: ​After a few weeks the


restaurant installed the system
which made taking orders more
efficient and easier for the waiting
staff.

Communication and literacy Situation: ​As a senior prefect, one


of my responsibilities was to attend
• Writing skills and help out at parents’ evenings.
• Speaking skills
• Listening, rapport building skills
Task: T​ o help a parent whose
(spoken)English was not very good
with her notes as she met with her
child's teachers during the evening.

Action: I​ would help the parent


take notes while she was
conversing with the teacher (her
child would translate).

Result: ​The parent was able to


leave the meeting with full and
comprehensive notes of her child’s
progression in school, without
anything being lost in translation.

Entrepreneurship skill Situation: ​A new member of staff


started working behind the bar
• Motivating others and they were not very confident in
• Decision-making their newly acquired bar skills.
• Being assertive Unfortunately for them they
started on a particularly busy day.

Task: T
​ o make sure the new bar
member was ok on the job while
keeping up with my own orders.

Action: I​ decided the best way for


them to learn and gain some
confidence was for them to
shadow me for a few hours. We
would take large orders together
and set up a system where I could
teach them how to make certain
drinks and cocktails.

Result: ​We were still able to keep


up with the demand at the bar as
well as the new staff member
becoming much more confident in
their bar skills. Also because of our
efficiency we made a large amount
in tips which we split between us.

Information Technology Situation: ​The mobile tablets we


used while on site were
• IT skills experiencing technical issues and
we couldn't sign anyone up.

Task: T
​ o reboot and reinstall the
programme that the company
used on the tablets as quickly as
possible.

Action: C
​ ollected all the tablets
from the team members and
quickly uninstalled the
programme. I then rebooted the
tablets and reinstalled the
programme.

Result: ​The tablets were


functioning normally again and we
were able to continue with our
work day.

Numeracy Situation: ​While analysing the


company social media accounts I

Action: I​ analysed the data on each


social media platform and decided
to have more targeted posts to try

views. This meant evaluating the

Result: ​After optimising the data, I


was able to begin posting at the
optimum times with the relevant
hashtags/tags. From this
engagement rates went up and so
did the reach across all the
platforms.

Teamwork Situation: P
​ lanning a charity
campaign to pitch.
• Working collaboratively with a
wide range of people Task: T
​ he task was to pitch a
• Making valuable contributions to specific area which we as a group
the team’s success believed we should focus on as a
charitable organisation. As a group
of four, we all had different ideas
and areas that we wanted to focus
on.

Action: W​ e decided to narrow


down and focus on areas that we
all had a common compassion for.
We wrote down ideas and did
quick pitches to each other and
decided which one we wanted to
go with from there.

Result: ​We decided which area we


wanted to focus on and from there
we planned a pitch that we would
present to our higher ups.

Problem-solving Situation: ​I was team leading for


the day and the area which we
• Investigating/researching were assigned was too quiet.
• Analysing/lateral thinking
• Creativity
Task: ​Each team member was
expected to get a minimum of two
new donors for the charity. But
because of the location I knew that
wouldn't be possible.

Action: I​ planned out a new route


on the map and called the head
office and got the information I
needed to know if we were allowed
to work in that area.

Result: ​We were able to move


areas and each team member
achieved their minimum sign ups.

Self-management Situation: M
​ y first week as team
leader.
• Responding flexibly and positively
to changing situations
• Managing your Task: I​ had to help plan the time
learning/performance and location where the team
• Attention to detail would meet and travel from.
• Taking responsibility

Action: E​ very evening I had to


communicate to the team the time
and meeting place for the next day.
I also had to make sure we had the
correct travel itineraries including
what time we would arrive, how
long it would take for us to reach
our location and vice versa. There
were times when team members
would be at the wrong location or
the trains would be delayed.

Result: ​As team leader I had to be


flexible and adapt to any situation
where things would and could go
wrong. But ultimately my
organisation skills were good
enough to ensure these avoidable
situations rarely happened.

Resilience Situation: ​I was working in a team


of six on a location day (we would
• Remaining positive during travel to different locations around
challenging situations the North West). It was a tough

feeling ill and had to leave early.
Task: T​ he team's morale was failing

keep the team's morale high, so I
decided to break for lunch early
and after we had eaten, we played
some team-building games and
went through a new strategy for
the rest of the day.

Result: ​The team's morale was


great again and with a new
strategy we were able to get the
engagement and sign ups we
needed to meet our daily target.
