SECTION A (Answer all questions in this section for 25 MARKS)

(a) Solve for x in the equation, 32x - 10(3x) + 1 = 0.

(b) Solve for x in the equation, log5 (2x+1) + log5 (x – 1) = 1.

(e) In a particular Science class of a Senior High School, 32 of the students offer Chemistry,
30 offer Physics and 22 offer Mathematics. 6 students offer all the three subjects, 13 offer
Chemistry and Physics only, 10 offer Chemistry and Mathematics and 5 offer Physics only.
Each student in the Science class offers at least one of these three subjects. Find

i) the number of students in the Science class;

ii) the number of students offering at least one of the subjects.

iii) if a student is chosen from the science class, what is the probability that he/she is offering
mathematics?

(f) The period of oscillation T(in seconds) of a pendulum varies directly as the square root of
its length L (in metres). If T = 2.8s when L = 4.0m, calculate L when T = 4.8s.

(g) Find the solution sets of the following inequalities:

(i) | 2x+3 | ≤ 5
(ii) 2(x + 1) - 5(x+1) < 9

(h) What values of x or t will make the following functions undefined.

(i) (ii) - 25 MARKS

SECTION B ( Answer at least a question in this section)

QUESTION 1.

(a) Differentiate the following functions:

(i) y = e5x+2 ln (x3 + 2x2 +3x +2) (ii) y= (iii) y = (sin 2x) e5-3x

(i) (ii)

(5 MARKS EACH)
QUESTION 2.

(a) Find the points of extremum (maximum and minimum points) of the function, y
= 2x3 + 4x2 + 2x + 3
(b) Find the increasing and decreasing points of the function,

y = 2x3 + 4x2 + 2x + 3

(c) Find the area between the parabola, y = 3x2 − 2x + 1 and the line, y = x + 4 .
(d) Given the curve, y = 3x2 − 2x3, find the equations of the Tangent line and the
Normal line at the point x =5.
(5 MARKS EACH)

QUESTION 3.

(a) Derive the decay and growth equations. - (5 MARKS)

(b) The population of a certain country is known to increase at a rate proportional to
the number of people presently living in the country. If after four years the
population has tripled and after six years the population is 1,500,000.
i) Estimate the number of people initially living in the country.
ii) Estimate the number of people living in the country after 10 years time. -
(8 MARKS)
(c) A tree disease is spreading throughout a large forested area. The rate of increase
in the number of infected tree is modelled by the differential equation;

dN/dt = kN-1(N-2), N>2 where N is the number of infected trees, t is the

time in days since the disease was first identified and k is a positive constant.
Solve the differential equation above and show that the general solution can be
written in the form, N = 1/(1-Aekt) - (12 MARKS)

SECTION C ( Answer at least a question in this section)

QUESTION 4.

a) By separating the variables, solve the differential equations,

(i) = 4ty,

(ii) = 4 – y2

3
(iii) = y (1 + 3x + x )

b) Find the particular solutions to the following differential equations;

(i) = , for y(1) = 2.

(ii) 2t = 3kt3y, through the point (0, 3). - (5 MARKS EACH)

QUESTION 5.

(a) if C= and D = find, (i) 2C + 3D (ii) CD - 4 MARKS EACH

(b) Find the inverse of the coefficient matrix of the systems of equations below:

2x - 3y + 4z = 2
3x + 2y - 3z = 7
2x + y - 2z = 4 - 9 MARKS
( c ) Using the inverse determined above or using the crammers rule, solve the systems of
equations below;

(a) Choosing class intervals of 49-53, 54-58 and so on, build a grouped frequency distribution
table for the information. - 8 MARKS

(b) Calculate the mean, mode and median of this distribution. - 6 MARKS

(c) Calculate the standard deviation of the distribution and find the interval one standard
deviation about the mean. - 4 MARKS
Construct the ogive of the above distribution and from your graph estimate the quartiles from
your graph. - 7 MARKS

NOTE:

Estimated Mean = Sum of (Midpoint × Frequency) / Sum of Frequency

Estimated Median = L + (N/2) − B ×w

where:

L is the lower class boundary of the group containing the median

N is the total number of values

B is the cumulative frequency of the groups before the median group

G is the frequency of the median group

w is the class width or interval.

Estimated Mode = L + fm − fm-1 ×w

(fm − fm-1) + (fm − fm+1)

where:

L is the lower class boundary of the modal group

fm-1 is the frequency of the group before the modal group

fm is the frequency of the modal group

fm+1 is the frequency of the group after the modal group

w is the class width or interval.

Estimated Variance = (∑fx2 / ∑f) - (∑fx/∑f)2

Estimated Standard Deviation = √ ( (∑fx2 / ∑f) - (∑fx/∑f)2 )
