1) What are the 3 main connectivity modes in Power BI?

Main Connectivity Modes in Power BI:

Power BI offers three primary data connectivity modes:
• Import Mode: In this mode, Power BI imports a copy of the data from the source to
Power BI Desktop. The data is refreshed periodically (as scheduled), and all report
visuals are based on the imported data, which results in faster report performance
since the data is already available locally.
• DirectQuery Mode: DirectQuery does not store data in Power BI. Instead, the report
queries the data source in real time. This is useful when dealing with large datasets
or when real-time data is needed, but it can be slower depending on the
performance of the data source.
• Live Connection: This mode is similar to DirectQuery but is primarily used for
connecting to SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS). It allows Power BI to interact with
an existing cube or model in real-time without importing data into Power BI.

2) What are the two gateways in Power BI?

There are two types of gateways in Power BI:
• On-premises Data Gateway: This gateway is used for multiple users and allows
scheduled refreshes and live queries for on-premises data. It can be shared with
others and supports cloud services like Power BI, Power Automate, and more.
• Personal Gateway: This gateway is meant for individual use, especially for scheduled
refreshes. It is suitable for personal data sources that are not shared with others and
cannot be used with live connections.

3) How gateway works ? Explain with diagram

A gateway serves as a bridge between Power BI in the cloud and your on-premises data
source. Here's how it works:
• Step 1: The Power BI service initiates a request to refresh data or run a query.
• Step 2: The gateway installed on the on-premises machine receives the request.
• Step 3: The gateway forwards the request to the appropriate on-premises data
source (SQL Server, Oracle, etc.).
• Step 4: The data source processes the query and returns the result through the
gateway.
• Step 5: The gateway sends the result back to Power BI in the cloud, which is then
displayed in reports or dashboards.
Here’s a simplified diagram:
Cloud (Power BI Service) <--> On-Premises Gateway <--> On-Premises Data Source

4) What is the difference Cloud based data and On premises data?

• Cloud-Based Data:
o Stored and managed in remote data centers, typically provided by services
like Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
o Accessed over the internet, offering scalability and flexibility.
o Managed and maintained by the cloud provider, which often handles
infrastructure, security, and backups.
• On-Premises Data:
o Data is stored on local servers within an organization’s physical location.
o The organization has full control over the infrastructure, security, and data
management.
o Suitable for organizations with strict data governance or compliance requirements
that cannot move to the cloud.

5) What are the step to use Gateway.

1. Install the Gateway: Download the Power BI gateway installer and set it up on your
local server.
2. Configure Gateway: Sign in with your Power BI credentials and configure the gateway
settings. You will register the gateway with the Power BI service.
3. Add Data Sources: In Power BI service, go to "Manage Gateways" and add your data
sources (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle).
4. Connect Reports: When creating reports in Power BI Desktop, use the gateway as the
connection for on-premises data sources.
5. Publish to Power BI Service: After publishing your report to the Power BI service,
configure the report to use the gateway for data refreshes or live connections.
6. Schedule Refreshes: You can schedule data refreshes from the cloud, and the
gateway will periodically fetch the latest data from the on-premises data source.
