Using Appropriate Language Styles

1. Identify and explain various language styles used in formal and informal settings. How many
are there, and in which situations are each used?

There are two primary languages styles are used:

 Formal language

 Informal language

Formal language is characterized by the use of standard English, more


complex sentence structures, infrequent use of personal pronouns, and
lack of colloquial or slang terms.

 In formal situation use correct grammar and speak complete


sentences: moreover is more clearly, carefully and slowly.
 Use it in business, academic, and legal contexts, and write such
as in reports, essays, and official documents, spoken
communication, such as in presentations, speeches, and
interviews.
 Formal language conveys respect, professionalism, and a
certain level of seriousness.

Informal language the use of nonstandard English forms, colloquial


vocabulary and typically shorter sentence structures.

 Used with friends and family, and in social media posts .


 Often used in spoken communication, such as in everyday
conversations, also be used in writing, such as in text messages
and emails.
 In informal situation people usually speak more quickly, omit
words and use slang.
 Allows for a more comfortable and friendly communication
style.

There still another language style is neutral/polite style

between formal and informal

Generally appropriate in most academic and professional situation.

For example, semi-formal language may be used in business emails

or in academic writing that is intended for a wider audience.


List some common expressions that exemplify each language style.

Expression in formal language

Greetings: Good morning/afternoon,

Introduction: Hello it’s a pleasure to meet you

Apologize: I’m very apologize about this case.

 Ex: We regret to inform you that the delivery will be delayed due to

adverse weather conditions

 Have you seen my glasses?

 She has decided to accept the job offer [formal]

in informal language

Greetings: Hey nice to meet you

Closing: See you later

Apologize: Sorry, My bad

 For example: Seen my glasses

 Sorry to keep you waiting

 Fancy a cuppa?
Expression in neutral/polite language

Hello, how are you,

Hi my name is Phuong nice to meet you,

I apologize for the mistake.

Would you mind closing the door
