SECTION- E
Question No. 37 to 39 are case-based/data -based questions with 2 to 3 short sub-parts.
Internal choice is provided in one of these sub-parts.
37. When a ray of light moving in a medium enters obliquely into another medium, it bends from its 4
path. This phenomenon is called refraction of light. The ability of a medium to refract light is also
expressed in terms of optical density. It is not the same as mass density. We use the terms 'rarer
medium ' and 'denser medium ' which actually means optically denser respectively. When we say
that a medium A is optically denser than the other medium B, we mean that the refractive index of
medium A is more than the refractive index of medium B. The speed of light is higher in rare
medium then denser medium. Thus, a Ray of light travelling from a rare medium to denser medium
slows down and bend towards the normal.
a) Define the term absolute Refractive index of a medium.
𝟒 𝟑
b) Absolute refractive indexes of water and glass are and respectively
𝟑 𝟐
(i) In which of the two media is the speed of light is more?
(ii) If a ray of light enters obliquely from glass to water, will it bend towards the normal or
away from the normal?
𝟒 𝟑
c) Absolute refractive indexes of water in class are and respectively. If the speed of light in glass
𝟑 𝟐
are 2 × 108 m/s, find the speed of light (i) water and (ii) vacuum.
OR
A ray of light incident on a rectangular glass slab immersed in any medium emerges parallel to
itself. Draw a labelled ray diagram to justify this statement.
38. The most obvious outcome of the reproductive process is the generation of individuals of similar 4
design, but in sexual reproduction they may not be exactly alike. The resemblances as well as
differences are marked. The rules of heredity determine the process by which traits and
characteristics are reliably inherited. Many experiments have been done to study the rules of
inheritance.
e) Why an offspring of human being is not a true copy of his parents in sexual reproduction?
f) While performing experiments on inheritance in plants, what is the difference between
F1 and F2 generation?
g) Why do we say that variations are useful for the survival of a species over time?

combinations? Why do new features which are not present in the parents, appear

39. Ores mined from the earth are usually contaminated with large amounts of impurities such as soil, 4
sand, etc., called gangue. The impurities must be removed from the ore prior to the extraction of
the metal. The processes Several steps are involved in the extraction of pure metal from ores.
Metals and Non-metals used for removing the gangue from the ore are based on the differences
between the physical or chemical properties of the gangue and the ore. Different separation
techniques are accordingly employed.

(i)What are the process for the extraction of metals of low reactivity series?
(ii)What is meant by Roasting?
(iii)Give two example of extracting metals low in the activity series with chemical equation.
