Unit 1 Test Review: Linear Functions

1. The table below gives the amount of Krabby Patties made by Spongebob for each year he’s
worked.

Years worked 1 2 3 4 5 6

Patties made 6,500 7,805 10,835 11,230 15,870 16,387

a) Use the data to above to write the approximate equation of the linear of best fit. Write
your answer using function notation.

b) Use your calculator to determine the equation of the line of best fit using linear
regression. Write your answer using function notation.

c) Interpret the slope and y-intercept in the context of the problem.

d) Find 𝑓(10), and interpret your answer in the context of the problem.

e) If 𝑓(𝑥) = 25000, find the value of 𝑥. Interpret its meaning in the context of the problem.
2. Write the equation for the line passing through (3, 1) and (−3, 4) in point-slope form.

3. Solve the following system of equations using any algebraic method.

4𝑥 − 𝑦 = −21 𝑥 + 2𝑦 = −8
a) { b) {
𝑥 + 19 = 3𝑦 𝑥 − 4 = 4𝑦

4. Solve the following absolute value equations.

a) |𝑥 + 8| + 5 = 2 b) −4|−3 + 7𝑥| + 9 = −59

5. Solve the given inequalities and graph their solution on a number line. Give the final solution
sets in interval notation.
a) 4 − 3𝑥 > 6 − 2𝑥 OR 5𝑥 − 3 ≤ 10𝑥 − 8 b) 7 < −4𝑥 − 17 < 11

Interval Notation: ______________________ Interval Notation: ______________________

c) 2 + 3|2𝑥 + 5| > 23 d) 5 − 7|6 − 3𝑥| ≤ 12

2 3 0 1
8. Solve the following system of equations using matrices. Be sure to include the original
matrix, the reduced matrix, and your final answer as a coordinate.
a) b)

9. Solve the linear programming problem below. Include a sketch of the graph to support your
answer.
Given: 𝑥 + 2𝑦 ≤ 16
𝑥+𝑦 ≤9
𝑥≥0
𝑦≥0

Maximize: 𝑃 = 60𝑥 + 40𝑦

10. Quality Bats Inc. manufactures two different quality wood baseball bats, the Gold Star Bat
and the Premium Bat.

a) Let 𝑥 = _____________________________________________; 𝑦 = ____________________________________________

b) Write an inequality to represent each constraint below:

The Gold Star Bat takes 8 hours to trim and lathe and the Premium Bat takes 5 hours to trim and
lathe. The maximum time for trimming and lathing is 80 hours.

The Gold Star Bat takes 2 hours to finish and the Premium Bat takes 5 hours to finish. The
maximum time for finishing is 50 hours.

11. A farmer is planning on planting alfalfa and corn and wants to maximize the profit.

• Alfalfa requires only 5 hours per ton to harvest, while corn requires 1 hours per ton to
harvest. The harvesting time available is at most 15 hours.

• Each crop requires 1 hour per ton for planting. The planting time available is at most 11
hours.

The farmer can make a profit of $250 for every ton of alfalfa harvested and $350 for every ton of
corn harvested. How much of each crop should the farmer grow in order to maximize the
profit?

Set up a system of inequalities for the problem, including a maximizing/minimizing equation.

Be sure to define your variables clearly. Then, graph and solve.

a) Define variables

b) State constraints

c) Sketch a graph

d) Find Vertices

e) State equation to be maximized

f) Find the maximum profit

g) How much of each crop should the farmer grow in order to maximize the profit?
