Lesson 1
General information about Task 1
1. Task 1 is normally a description task.
Therefore, you are tested on your ability to interpret the information given 2. You should write at least 150 words 3. You are given 20 minutes for Task 1 4. There are 6 types of questions • Line graph • Bar chart • Pie chart • Table • Process (diagram) • Map (diagram)
Task 1 can also be divided into 3 types
1. Trends (have a time period where you can see increases and decreases): line graph, bar chart, pie charts and table 2. Comparison (does not contain time period): bar chart, pie charts and table 3. Diagrams: maps and process
Essay structure for Task 1
There are 4 paragraphs in Task 1 1. Introduction – 1 sentence 2. Overview (summary) (NOT conclusion) – 1-2 sentences 3. Details part 1 – 3-4 sentences 4. Details part 2 – 3-4 sentences (5. Overview – optional) ✓ What to do in the introduction? You should simply paraphrase the question!

The table compares two primary schools in terms of
a number of problems their children faced over a period of 10 years from 2005 to 2015
(nice paraphrasing which you should apply to your
own introduction if you want to impress the examiner from the very beginning. “compare + in terms of” is difficult as candidates confuse “taqqoslanayotgan narsa” with “qaysi jihatdanligi”. Therefore, be careful with using it)
Compare + in terms of
1. The (bar) chart below shows the total
number of Olympic medals won by 12 different countries.
(Example: The bar chart compares 12 various nations
in terms of how many Olympic medals they won in total). 2. The line graph below shows changes in global food and oil prices between 2000 and 2011.
3. The line graph below shows the amounts of
waste produced by three companies over a period of 15 years from 2000 to 2015.
4. The pie charts below compare water usage in
San Diego, California and the rest of the world.
5. The pie charts below show how dangerous waste
products are dealt with in three countries.
6. The bar graph shows global sales (in billions of
dollars) of 4 different types of digital games between 2000 and 2006. 7. The (line) graph below shows the average number of UK commuters travelling each day by car, bus or train between 1970 and 2030.
The task for you! Paraphrase the task 1 questions
above using “compare + in terms of” structure to get better as the saying goes “Practice makes perfect” Furthermore, keep in mind that in order for us to use the structure, we need to have at least two things to compare. Otherwise, we have no other options but to use another alternatives.
