Experiment 5

StudentName: Soham Dixit UID:22BCS10135

Branch: BE-CSE Section/Group: 605(B)
Semester: 5th Date of Performance:16.08.24
Subject Name: Computer Networks Subject Code: 22CSH-312

1. Aim: Implement Data link Layer Protocols such as CSMA, CSMA/CD etc.

2. Requirements:
• Cisco Packet Tracer installed.
• Basic Network Topology with devices (PCs, switches/hubs).
• Ethernet cables to connect devices.
• IP address configuration on devices.
• Simulation Mode to observe CSMA/CD behavior.

3. Objective: To understand and simulate the working of Data Link Layer

protocols, specifically CSMA and CSMA/CD, in a network environment
using Cisco Packet Tracer.

4. Procedure:

1. Setup the Network:

• Open Cisco Packet Tracer and create a simple network topology
with devices like PCs, switches, and hubs.
• Connect the devices using Ethernet cables.

2. Configuring Devices:
• Assign IP addresses to the PCs.
• Ensure that the network interfaces are correctly configured and
connected.

3. Understanding CSMA/CD:
• CSMA/CD is used in Ethernet networks to manage how devices on
the same network segment access the shared medium.
DEPARTMENT OF
COMPUTER SCIENCE & ENGINEERING

• In Cisco Packet Tracer, CSMA/CD is automatically handled by the

Ethernet protocol.

4. Simulating Network Traffic:

• To observe CSMA/CD in action, start by sending data packets
between devices.
• Use the Simulation Mode in Cisco Packet Tracer to slow down the
process and watch the packets being transmitted.
• If two devices attempt to send data at the same time, Packet Tracer
will simulate a collision, and you can observe the collision detection
and retransmission process.

5. Analyzing Results:
• After the simulation, you can analyze the packet flow and see how
the network handled collisions, if any occurred.
• Use the Event List in Simulation Mode to check the detailed steps of
CSMA/CD protocol in action.

4. Learning Outcome:
1. Understand Network Access Control: Learn how devices share the same
communication medium using CSMA.
2. Observe Collision Handling: Visualize how CSMA/CD detects and
handles data collisions in an Ethernet network.
3. Simulate Real-World Scenarios: Apply theoretical knowledge to
simulate and analyze data transmission in a network.
4. Analyze Network Traffic: Use simulation tools to observe packet flow
and understand protocol behavior during collisions.
5. Strengthen Networking Skills: Enhance practical networking skills by
setting up and configuring network devices in Cisco Packet Tracer.
