b) To use switch to connect a pc’s and Setup LAN

c)To connect two LAN with 4pc’s Router

Theory:-
Introduction:-
Cisco Packet Tracer is a powerful simulation software developed by
Cisco Systems. It allows users to create virtual networks, configure
devices, and test how networks work without using real hardware.

Q) Why Use Packet Tracer?

• Helps learn networking basics (e.g., IP addressing, routing,

switching).
• Used by students and professionals to practice networking
skills.
• No need for real routers, switches, or cables – it’s all
virtual.
• Allows testing and troubleshooting of network setups.

Basic Features of Cisco Packet Tracer:

1. Workspace Area:
o Where you place and connect devices (like routers,
switches, PCs).
2. Device List:
o Includes routers, switches, computers, cables, etc.
3. Connections:
o Allows you to connect devices using different types of
cables.
4. Simulation Mode:

o You can see how data (packets) travel across the

network step-by-step.
5. Real-Time Mode:
o Network works in real-time like a real-world network.

Steps(Procedure) to Use Cisco Packet Tracer:

1) Open Packet Tracer.

2) Drag and drop devices (like PC, switch, router) into the
workspace.

3) Connect the devices using the appropriate cables (e.g., copper

straight-through for PC to switch).

4) Configure IP addresses on devices (using Command Line

Interface or GUI).

5) Use the simulation mode to check how data flows and

troubleshoot if needed.

Key Tools and Components:

a. IP Configuration:

• Every device in a network (like PC, router) needs an IP address.

• IP configuration means assigning an IP address and subnet mask
to a device.
• In Packet Tracker:

PC → Desktop → IP Configuration → Type IP (e.g., 192.168.1.1)

and Subnet Mask (usually 255.255.255.0).

b. Ping Command:

• Used to test the connection between two devices.

• If ping is successful, the devices are connected.
• In Packet Tracker:

PC → Desktop → Command Prompt → type ping 192.168.1.2.

c. Hub:

• A basic networking device that connects multiple devices.

• It sends the same data to all connected devices (less efficient, no
smart traffic handling).

d. Switch:

• A smarter device than a hub.

• Sends data only to the intended device, not to all.
• Commonly used in real networks to connect PCs, printers, etc.

e. Router:

• A device that connects different networks.

• Used to route data from one network to another (e.g., from one
LAN to the internet).

• Has its own interfaces, each with different IP addresses.

3. Simple Activity: Connect PCs Using a Switch

Steps:

1. Drag and Drop Devices:

o 2 PCs and 1 Switch.

2. Connect Devices:
o Use Copper Straight-Through Cable to connect:
▪ PC0 → Switch
▪ PC1 → Switch

3. IP Configuration:
o PC0: IP = 192.168.1.2, Subnet = 255.255.255.0
o PC1: IP = 192.168.1.3, Subnet = 255.255.255.0

4. Ping Test:
o On PC0 → Desktop → Command Prompt → type ping
192.168.1.3
o If replies are received, the network works correctly.

➔ After performing this lab activity, students will be able to:

1. Understand the basic components of a computer network,

such as PCs, switches, hubs, and routers.
2. Use Cisco Packet Tracer software to create and simulate
basic network topologies.
3. Configure IP addresses on end devices (like PCs) and
intermediate devices (like routers).
4. Use the ping command to test network connectivity between
devices.
5. Identify and troubleshoot simple network connectivity
issues using simulation and real-time modes.
6. Gain hands-on experience in building, configuring, and
testing networks in a virtual environment.

Conclusion
In this lab, we learned about Cisco Packet Tracer is an excellent tool
to practice networking skills such as assigning IP addresses, using ping
commands, and working with networking devices like hubs, switches, and
routers. This software helps understand how data travels in a network and
how devices are connected and configured.
