HISTORY
PROJECT WORK:
CBSE has decided to introduce project work in history for classes XI and XII in 2013-14 as a part
of regular studies in classroom, as project work gives students an opportunity to develop higher
cognitive skills. It takes students to a life beyond text books and provides them a platform to refer
materials, gather information, analyse it further to obtain relevant information and decide what
matter to keep and hence understand how history is constructed.
Project work will help students:
Objective:
• To develop skill to gather data from a variety of sources, investigate diverse viewpoints and
arrive at logical deductions.
• To develop skill to comprehend, analyse, interpret, evaluate historical evidence, and understand
the limitation of historical evidence.
• To develop 21st century managerial skills of co-ordination, self-direction, and time
management.
• To learn to work on diverse cultures, races, religions, and lifestyles.
• To learn through constructivism-a theory based on observation and scientific study.
• To inculcate a spirit of inquiry and research.
• To communicate data in the most appropriate form using a variety of techniques.
• To provide greater opportunity for interaction and exploration.
• To understand contemporary issues in context to our past.
• To develop a global perspective and an international outlook.
• To grow into caring, sensitive individuals capable of making informed, intelligent, and
independent choices.
• To develop lasting interest in history discipline.
ENGLISH
Suggestions for Project Work:
The Project can be interdisciplinary in theme. The ideas/issues highlighted in the chapters/
poems/ drama given the prescribed books can also be developed in the form of a project.
Students can also take up any relevant and age-appropriate theme.
Such topics may be taken up that provide students with opportunities for listening and speaking
and writing. Some suggestions are as follows:
a) Interview-Based research
b) Project files inclusive of Certificate, Acknowledgement, Questionnaire, Project report.
Choose a particular topic either from the text or any social issue. Include detailed information
about the topic along with some pictures. Example: Value Education. Need and importance, What
we need to improve, purpose of value education, importance of value education in school, how it
can be taught in school and at home, conclusion.
Students can choose a topic on which to do their research/ interview, e.g. a student can choose the
topic: “Evolving food tastes in my neighborhood” or “Corona pandemic and the fallout on
families.” Read the available literature.
The student then conducts interviews with a few neighbors on the topic. For an interview,
students will frame questions based on the preliminary research/background.
Students listen to podcasts/ interviews/radio or TV documentaries on a topic and prepare a report
countering or agreeing with the speakers. Write an 800 - 1000 words report and submit.
Students can create their own video/ audio, after writing a script. Before they decide a format, the
following elements can be taken into consideration:
● Theme/topic of the audio/video. Would the child like to pick a current issue or something
artistic like theatre?
● What are the elements that need to be part of the script?
● Will the video/audio have an interview with one or more guests?
● Would they prefer to improvise while chatting with guests, or work from a script?
● What would be the duration?
The project will end with a presentation and subsequently a viva. Teachers will be able to
assess the core language skills of the students and help them grow as 21st century critical
thinkers.
