Introducing the UNCRC

Children’s Rights as Human Rights


Childian and young people have the same human ñghts aa adulta. Theae ara the same rights that protect
everyone. They span me entire spectrum of civil, politM, economic, social, cuhural and environmental rights.
Children and young paople also have additional rights that recognise that childhood ia a special, protected time,
in which children must be allowed to grow, learn, play, develop and flourish with dignity.
Specific human rights for children are set out in tha UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

on the action takan by adults to implement their rights in practice. As children their voices can be unheard, or
more aas‹ty dismissed.
For that reason, the UNCRC recognises that Children are human beings with fundamentd rights that ere written
into international law. It aleo makae clear that special action needs to be taken to enaure thoaa rights are
raspected, protected and fulfilled.
As one ‹›f the core United Nations (UNj human rigMs treaties, the UNCRC helps to safeguard the dignity and
the w]uaI and inalienable ñghts of all children and young people. k does this by making sure that Important
righte sat out In qthar international human rights treaties are applied In a way mat la relevant ma appropriate to
the needs of children and young people. The UNCRC makas claar that in all actions concerning children, the
best interests of the child shall be a primary consideration.

There are four articles In tt›e UNCRC mat are seen aa special.
They are known as the •Generat Principles• and they help to interpret all the other articles.

Best interests of the child to be a primary consideration \ArticIe 3)
Right to life, survival and davalopment (Article 6)
Right to express a view and has that view taken imo account (Article 12)
